When, it is on bypass the sound gets through fine but when I actually switch the distortion on, there is no sound.

I think that this may be a problem with the circuit, but I really hope not as that means I'll have to send it off to be fixed.

Any ideas?

im sure if you post us pics of the circuit inside we can show you whats wrong

big muffs have a very simple circuit and as long as you can do a weeny bit of soldering, you should be able to do it yourself

Are you sure the cords are in the right inputs?

Sound stupid, but a lot of pedals work when the pedal is bypassed with the IN and OUT cords switched and make no sound when on.
