Okay, I know that everyone would say "Get a 1w amp". Unfortunately, based on my experience, to play metal, it is actually better to do it through a 150w SS amp over a 15w tube amp... so imagine how it would sound if I run it at 1 w? Plus, at 1w level, may as well as go with FET amps.

So, I have three options for power attenuator:
a) Homemade: Use an in wall mono power attenuator
-Cheapest (no more than 50)
-I can fix it if something goes wrong
-Limit to a single ohmage, and only 10 steps at most
b) Scholtz power soak
-used for $125
-Heard a lot of bad comments, such as the fact that it fails a lot... and a lot of good comments too
c) Weber mass
-used for $175
-Still $50 more than power soak
d) Buy new (any; need recommendations)
-Will be more than 300

P.S. If it fries the tranny it's no good. If it shorten the power tubes life I can accept.

I'd go weber mass, because i have no idea what this home made stuff you speak of is.
Don't get a hotplate though, they're rediculously overpriced.

Hotplates are good attenuators, but they are pretty expensive. Very well built though..

Have you tried your amp with an attenuator? I've tried 3 different ones (THD, the old Altair one, & a Power Soak), & all 3 suck a bit of life from your tone, with the Hot Plate being the best I've used due to its versatility & adjustability. People say the Weber sucks the least amount of tone, but I've never tried one. I would at least try one out first, because you may not like it.

Get the Ultimate Attenuator. It's rather expensive, but it can put it all the way to ultra low bedroom volumes with minimal tone loss (at least that's what I've heard).

I just bought the 50w mini mass for $100, it is on the way. I can't imagine paying $450 for the ultimate attenuator, but I hear that there is no tone loss at all.

Not going to consider ultimate attenuator, since it's too expensive.

I'm not familiar with the Power Soak, but I'm a bit skeptical. What features does it provide, and what are the models based on?

For instance, Weber Mass needs to be 1 1/2 times the RMS wattage of your amp, while Hotplates are designed to match the impedance of your amp(with up to 185 watts RMS).

Does the Power Soak have high and low frequency boosts? Because you will need them..
