is it possible to have passive pickups with an active preamp?

also, what are the main difference between active preamps and passive preamps.

!!!! smakkle dorf! do not preamp a passive unless you have a realllyyy high watt amplifier. Also passives dont have preamps. so there is no difference.

anything that would be a preamp, by definition, is active. passive networks don't amplify.

yes.

active pickups are just passives with a small preamp inside. there is no reason why you can't connect your passive pickups to (a) preamp(s) that is(are) mounted in the guitar's control cavity rather than internal to the pickup assembly.

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.
