Ok so i have near on 40GB of music on my computer. And since i only have like a 70GB hardrive..... its using a lot of my space. I have more to add but i have less than a gig left and i dont wanna use it up. On the other hand, my ipod has the same amount of music however also happens to have a 160GB hard drive....

So my question is, Do you think its safe to store EVERYTHING on my ipod. As in have the music that actually plays and then enable disk mode to store the files on my computer too. I realise that this means i cant play music through itunes without my ipod. I can get over that. But if i was to lose my music, i think i would actually die!

I cant think of why it wouldnt be safe, i just though i would ask the pit first.......

Burn back up DVDs. Though, they're 4.7GB each...

Or, just lash out some money for an external HDD.

I don't trust my iPod with my music.

An iPod is essentially a gigantic thumb drive. You can put anything on it, games, movies, pr0nziez, music (obviously), Microsoft Word.

Anything.

laptop or desktop?

Desktop: new internal drive, you should be able to fit at least 2 in there unless its crap

Laptop: external.

I say buy an external hard drive especially since operating your ipod through itunes is even slower than it normally is (on windows anyway) but if you have a mac no worrys about that

Don't you have the original CD? iTunes can re-download music that you already paid for. If you didn't pay for that music then, well, that's what you get.

Honestly if its a desktop he needs both. I have a terabyte of HDD space, and I still back up movies music anything I wanna keep longterm to an external.

I will be getting one in the next few months. I dont have the moneyz at the moment see. I wanna get something like 250GB or along the lines. That kinda storage is pretty pricey on the emerald isle. Especially for an unemplyed student.....

I need to clear the space. Seriously badly. My computer is sooooo slow. I have a few files on it that have been there for about 6 months and they are totally okay. Its only a temporary measure, but the risk is sooo big

If it helps i am VERY careful with my ipod. I dont bang it around like. And it is only 6 moths old, and has never given me trouble...

What you need to do is back up your music and anything important, then format and do a fresh install. Did that on my parents old mac yesterday thats been on pretty much 24/7 for four years, never been cleaned up or anything, and it works like a dream now. Or as much of a dream as a mac can, annoying PoS's as they are.

Are you saying you would gladly re-rip 40GB of music back on to a computer??

I shall give you a call if anything goes wrong then!

I would if I had to, obviously not gladly.

Never use your ipod for storing any kind of files! i just lost all of my music and everything because the files were suddenly damaged with no reason, and i cant get them back, i even try using commands in the operating system to recover the information but nohting worked,
(i wonder if an engineer can fix it)

i really feel bad because i was already going to backup all my music in dvds

and since i enabled disk mode and had stored all my files in there like if it was a normal external hd, it makes me think i can't trust in external hard drives either so maybe the only solution is to store information in CDs or DVDs as they are for reading only

Exactly, so re ripping them isnt exactly a preferable option for me

same thing happened to me, and i put it all on my ipod. was great for a few months, then my ipod got a virus (or something like that) that killed all the files. i lost everything. i wouldn't adivse it.
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.

I don't know if this threads dead or whatever, but I'm having the same problem as TS. I'm wondering if I moved all my music onto an external hard drive, would they still play on iTunes or would they all show that 'The original file cannot be found' message even when I have the drive plugged in? Would I have to import it all again?
#29
The thread was clearly dead and now we have a new efficient iPod thread. Use it.

Also if it's that bad get an external hard drive?

Buy an external hard drive, you can get like 300gb for $100, problem solved.

if you're not using a laptop, get a second hard drive! It's only like £40 for 320 gigabytes.
