Metal is obviously full of types who live way outside of the mainstream, but even then there still tends to be people who are so utterly unique that they deserve special mention. I'm not talking about the "OMG gr1m blakk metuhlz" types; I'm talking about the people in the metal scene who pretty much defy any kind of classification.

One is Gaahl:

"Yes, we had a close relationship," admits modeling agent Dan DeVero about shock rocker Gaahl to iBergen.no.

On stage with GORGOROTH, Gaahl is the very definition of a mother-in-law's nightmare.

The long-haired, evil-looking man with corpse paint scares the hell out of the parent generation, while fans all over the world love and admire his terrifying masculinity.

Together with modeling agent Dan DeVero (see photo below), however, he displays far more feminine sides.

The musician dressed in black and the fur-wearing modeling agent are behind the clothing collection Wynjo, which will launch in 2009.

The two men became very close friends after they met a year and a half ago.

"We had hired models from DXD Models for a music video to be recorded in Bergenshallen. During the shoot, Dan suddenly appeared and became upset with us because one of his models had been served wine. That was the first time I met him," says Gaahl, or Kristian Espedal, which is his real name.

DeVero's rage, however, quickly turned to warmer feelings.

"Kristian and I developed a close relationship, and he often told me he had strong feelings for me," DeVero tells iBergen.no while Espedal silently drinks from his glass of wine.

A year and a half later they are no longer swooning, but they are still partners. Thanks to their unlikely meeting in 2006, they've put their heads and wallets together to launch something as unique as as a wholly Norwegian clothing collection for women.

Wynjo is a name that Espedal came up with.

"Wynjo is an ancient Norse word meaning happiness, or to be more precise, the search for happiness. Perfection. I have always been preoccupied with aesthetics and what is beautiful. This collection will bring out the elegant and the feminine in women," the novice fashion investor explains to iBergen.no.

But this is in strong contrast to your role as frontman of GORGOROTH, so how did the people around you react to this?

"Those who know me in private didn't think it was particularly strange. I do not care about what people in general think. It's not as if I'm going to change as a person just because suddenly there are some dresses out in the world. Besides, I like confusing people," Espedal says, grinning.

The clothes are designed by Sonja Wu and will be presented at a preview in Bergen in September. Inspired by fashion mecca Paris, DeVero and Espedal now hope they can create a fashion house in Norway with several designers on the team.

"We want to attract young talent and give them an opportunity to design for us. Designer students are welcome, since it is the young who create fashion. There are way too few people in the Norwegian business world who dare take a chance on young entrepreneurs, and I am eternally grateful to Kristian for helping me with this," DeVero says.

Nothing wrong with the choice of lifestyle, but given his onstage persona and such, it's an extremely stark contrast when he chooses to release a woman's clothing line. He's definitely a multifaceted individual (most of us have seen True Norwegian Black Metal, so we know this), and he's one of the few in this scene who's willing to show off all of his sides.

The other is Toby Driver of maudlin of the Well/Kayo Dot:

maudlin's music, lyrics, and atmosphere dealt predominantly with the subject of astral projection. The band tried to find music rather than compose it. This was done through practicing astral projection and lucid dreams, from which the band were purportedly able to "bring back" pre-existing music from the astral plane (as stated by Toby Driver in the liner notes included with the reissued Bath and Leaving Your Body Map).

Definitely a weird concept, but I'm inclined to think it's a gimmick. Of course, I really don't like maudlin of the Well, so eh.

I know there's more than just those two, and if any of you say Varg I'll scrape off your genitals with a fork. Who else is there?

If he released a women's clothing line, did you really expect anything else? Also, this is the first openly gay metaller that I've heard of.

I was going to say Gaahl.

Mike Patton is pretty screwed...not entirely metal, but extreme in any case.

Trey Azagthoth is a real character and quite visionary.

His whole belief system is very interesting and seems to be based off of the personal will being the most powerful and looking at things from different angles.Along with being in a highly spiritual death metal band. He is also a huge Anime fan, plays video games constantly and has probably done more Acid then The Beatles.

This is written in the FFF lyric booklet and is particularly inspiring to me.

The Living Continuum is the principal force and form
By which all manifestation is possible
It is both the active willful ability to to create
As well as the materials to create from
It is both the force that expands our universe
as well as the form which contains it
It is both the active willful ability to assemble
As well as the material parts that make up this assembly
It is both that which is as well as that which is not

It is both the Alpha and Omega of the lightning flash
For from the left hand is produced fire
And from right does the waters pour
From the breath issues forth the thunderous Me-Gal-Gal

Most Bitter-Sweet Divine Ordering Principle

It is both the activeness and the stillness

This activeness is one with the Triumvirate of Most High.

The Triumvirate of

Chthhulhu
I Am The Living Active God

Habsu
My True Will Can Not Be Denied

Amah-Ushumgal-Anna
I Create Myself As Well As My World

Amen

The purpose of Morbid Angel has seemingly always meant to be hymns to the " Ancient Ones" who he claims guide his life so much. He also speaks of his guitar technique as just letting the lava flow from your soul. He in my opinion is the most insightful man in Death Metal and interviews of his are very inspiring. I'll post some of the better ones in a bit.

If anything Gaahl is scarier to me now. He was alright with the torturing and the '...satan'. But this is god-awful.

Oh sorry, it has to be metal? Well, he does a little bit of metal :/. Umm, he writes comic books, that are filled with crazyness, and then he composes epic ~8 minute songs that go along with different books. If you haven't read the comic books the songs make no sense whatsoever.

Does that count ???

While I do enjoy Coheed every now and then, none of Claudio Sanchez's music is metal in any way, shape, or form.

Stating the obvious: DEVIN TOWNSEND.

Spent a week and a bit in a mental institution, wrote an album about what he feels when he's not taking his meds, wrote another album on a friend's couch, has another project which is purposefully in negation to another project, wrote a concept album about coffee, has a skullet, releases anything from industrial grind/thrash to ambient albums, has his name on probably more than a 100 albums since 1996, and he ate his hair dresser.

Deeds mentioned Patton, I do agree that he should be let in here, and the guy is a complete nutjob.

What? Aren't those Lovecraft characters?

But yeah, Trey's awesome. He seems like a really down-to-earth kinda guy, just with weird beliefs. I personally don't think he honestly believes that Cthulu is lurking in the Pacific ocean though, I just think he's real interested in the occult, lovecraft, and darker kind of literature. I think he'd be an awesome person to hang out with, and how he describes morbid angel's riffs as "alive and moving" (or something like that) gave me a whole new look at their music.

Anyways, not entirely metal (Mostly avant-garde, experimental, funk, alt.rock, etc, but he incorperated some thrash-sounding vocals to some of his work, and mr.bungle was originally a death metal band): Mike Patton. Has anybody heard "after school special", or anything by Fantomas? Definition of disturbing.

Also, Dead (obviously), and Paul Masvidal. Paul seems like a pretty cool guy, but his beliefs do kind of freak me out.

Glen Benton, definetely.
"Hey everyone, I hate Jesus so, I'm gonna kill myself!"
*few years pass by after he claimed he would kill himself*
"Committing suicide is for cowards!"
Not to mention his claim of seeing and running after sasquatch in the forest.

I probably have it wrong, but as far as I know, Maya is a concept that the psychical world around us that we percieve is just an illusion, a "Veil of maya" that covers the truth, a cosmic, celestial being. Something along the lines of that. It does really interest me, though, and I really dig Paul's (and Cynic, pretty much) whole spirituality thing. (I'm pretty much anti-religion, but spiritual-ish stuff always seemed cool to me).

Well obviously it's symbolism. But he applies occult ideas to his philosophy in life and to Morbid Angels lyrics witch is just awesome. His whole belief system is based off creating your own universe, because ,"all this physical stuff is all really created by us".I'm not sure if he ever actually read much lovecraft. Some sources told me that he found them in some nocronomicon demon book(a few were produced actualy, their no evil dead type **** but they do talk about "The Ancient Ones" and other demonic stuff.)Trey has a brilliant outlook on everything.
