Hey I was just wonderin, in an amp where you can convert them to whichever, can you simply just change the tubes out without any biasing if they are brand new tubes?

Cheers

Nope, If you go from EL34 to 6L6 without changing bias the bias will be much too cold. GO the other way and you'll burn up your new tubes

They do only in that they are both octal bases. Pin connections, bias circuitry and heater circuit must be altered to change from one to the other.
Here's a summary of the main differences:
  • Pin 1 and 8 are seperate in a EL34, Pin (the beam) in a 6L6 is internally connected.
  • 6L6 has a max Vp of 500Vdc, EL34 is rated up to 800Vdc
  • The 6L6 can dissipate 30W, EL34 only 25W
  • The 6L6 uses .9amp heater current vs 1.5amp in a EL34
