So, what do you think is the best? The EHX Small Stone or the MXR Phase 90? The Small Stone is a bit cheaper and you can get more sounds out of it, which I am probably not gonna use, but it's still nice. I just need the basic phaser sound.

What do you say?

good choices

effects pedals sound pretty crappy through cubes, i have one, so you should probably just save for that new amp.

I like the Small Stone better.

I own both.... both are good.... and to describe one as "the best" is a poor way to describe them. The EHX seems to be a mellower phase, a bit more "vocal", however there is a noticeable drop in volume when it is engaged. The MXR is a "richer, more lush" sounding phase, that can get a bit crazy sounding when turned up (more so than the EHX).

I prefer the MXR phase... but thats just me..... I would tell you to try them both out (with your gear) and see which you like best.

Your crappy amp achieved a purposely crappy tone? I'll alert the presses.

did you mean to type "flanging" there? cus if you did you're looking in the wrong place since these are phasers, not flangers.

The small stone has an irritating volume drop when you use it (unless you get the nano - i've heard they fixed it with the nano stone). But the sound more than makes up for it.
Rig Winter 2017:

Fender Jazzmaster/Yamaha SG1000
Boss TU-3, DS-2, CS-3, EHX small stone, Danelectro delay
Laney VC30-112 with G12H30 speaker, or Session Rockette 30 for smaller gigs
Elixir Nanoweb 11-49 strings, Dunlop Jazz III XL picks
Shure SM57 mic in front of the amp

i like the small stone. there's supposedly a volume drop, but i hear there's a simple mod to fix this that you could do yourself.

But wait, you want the basic FLANGING tone? Why are you looking at phasers? a FLANGER is what you'd need. I'd say an MXR Flanger or the EHX Electric Mistress in that case.

my vote is for the MXR 90

2009 Fender 72 Deluxe Telecaster
Yamaha F-130 Acoustic

MXR Micro Chorus

Check out the new MXR '74 Vintage phase 90. Its a custom shop phase. They're not much more expensive than a normal phase 90 and they're way better IMO. I wrote a review, so you can check that out if you want

I like the old MXR script logo phasers, but they're almost impossible to find at any price, but the EVH phaser reproduces that more subtle phase tone as well as regular phase tone very well. IMO, the Small Stone is too much effect (I own both phasers, but never used the Stone since I got the EVH). Try them out & see what YOU like best.
