I wasn't sure whether to put this thread in Classic or Modern Rock, but I figure this is the best choice. U2 have always been one of my favorite bands, and I think that they are kind of overlooked by the UG community. The Edge isn't that technically gifted, but he writes some really good guitar parts and uses effects brilliantly.

Feel free to discuss anything u want about U2. I might put some kind of poll up later.

U2 is one of my favorite bands, the Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby are some of the best albums ever, of course.

I'm not really into them.

They have a few great songs, but I don't have any of their albums, nor do I feel the need to fix that.

They already have this thread anyway: https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=341833&highlight=joshua+tree

I have to strongly disagree here.

U2 haven't made a good album since Joshua Tree. Infact their albums have been poor since Joshua Tree, and even that wasn't that good.

IMO a very over-rated band.

In my opinion, Achtung Baby is better than The Joshua Tree.

Yeah, big U2 fan. Boy is my favourite, but I prefer Joshua Tree to Acthung Baby. All that you cant leave behind is my favourite of the modern albums.

Hey, where'd that come from? I used the searchbar before i made this thread, and nothing turned up.

Also, to weigh in on the "favorite albums" discussion, I have Boy, War, and Achtung Baby as my top 3.

It didn't turn up because "U2" is too short of a title.

That's why I searched for "The Joshua Tree" instead.

It sounds to me like your a little stuck up and stuck in the past. Although I agree that their early albums are best, the recent ones are very good as well. I think you gotta get your head out of the past, and enjoy modern music. No offense.

BTW, My favorite Album is Boy, followed by War, followed by the next one they will put out (believe me, I have a sixth sense for these things).

Have you listened to the album All That You Can't Leave Behind? It's their second newest, and I'd consider it to be among their best.

On topic of All That You Can't Leave Behind, it has been a while since I've listened to it in full. However, I had one of my "nostalgia lapses" and came across the popular single Beautiful Day. I had enjoyed the song when I was younger, but that was before I really listened to music intently. When I listened to it last, the lyrics really touched me.

Yeah, not a lot of people in this forum seem to have liked HTDAAB, but I thought it was one of their best.

And that new album sure is great. (Will be for all you non-clairvoyants) Bono seems happy about it. Haven't heard Edge, Adam, or Larry's take on it cause no one realizes they exist

Beautiful Day gets played at my work all the time. I like it.

Elevation, the other popular single, is a pretty sick jam too.

Elevation's great. Ever seen the video?

Umm Lets see In My opinion i like htdaab... It's also U2's favourite... it gets back to real rock n roll

U2 often bore me, and I don't consider them to be anything special. Just derivative pop-rock, with an overassured self-righteousness.
I play by my own rules. And I have one rule; There are no rules... but if there are, they're there to be broken. Even this one.

Confused? Good.

As a whole, I'm not a big fan of the group. The versatility in song writing is what saves them becuase I find myself hating some songs and liking others. I don't personally own any albums

They are pretty versatile. The same group is responsible for I Will Follow and that bizarre electronic **** from Zooropa. (IMO worst U2 album)

This.
I mean, I tried to like them by listening to them with an open mind. But they're just too god damn boring and too poppy.

I choose War in the poll.
I would have chosen Under a Blood Red Sky (best album ever made?) if it had been in the poll.

U2 is by far my favorite band.

I do hate the stuff they made in the 90's, though. Yes, including Achtung Baby. But they were great in the 80's, and their two latest albums are great as well.

Not all bands manage to make it back, but U2 did, ATYCLB and HTDAAB are great albums.

Watching Barack Obama speaking at the DNC; he walked out to City of Blinding Lights and still has not stopped saying "thank you".

I think that U2 have awesome music. However, the whole image that they've got, a Christian rock band, is a big con. Iggy Pop will tell you that U2 doesn't really care about the starving children in Africa. Whether that's true, or, not, I think U2's music is more important. Achtung Baby, Boy, October, and their other albums are awesome.

U2 is one of my top bands, if not the top bands in my list. My favorite U2 album is either the Joshua Tree or Zooropa (which is under "other" in the poll!)

Bono's a twat??

I love their music, don't get me wrong... But Bono needs to take off his sunglasses every once in a while.

He wears his sunglasses because he has very sensitive eyes and flash bulbs screw up his vision.
I also used to think Bono was a twat, I figured he was a self-righteous prick... but he really isn't. I read "An Interview With Bono" and was really impressed with him. He's a really classy guy, and he's very candid in that book. I think he really is a genuine guy, whether you like him or not.
Anyhow, as far as their albums go... I voted for The Joshua Tree because "With or Without You" is pretty much my favorite song ever... other than "One". I also love "All That You Can't Leave Behind" a lot, their only albums I don't like are Zooropa and Pop.
I'm going to go ahead and put this out there... I freaking LOVE How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. It may not be as classic as some of their other albums, but I truly love that album.

Why is Mysterious Ways so funky-chunky awesome?

Because of the Edge's awesome Digitech Chunky-Funky pedal. Or something like that. But yeah, what kind of effect is he using on that riff?
