So apparently best buy will soon convert all of their stores to have a large area designated for musical instruments (i know now they sell crappy wal-mart guitars, but I'm talking big name instruments). They'll sell guitars, drums, keyboards, everything. If this really happens it'll probably drive down guitar centers prices

sweet, then they can pay me lots of money to work there and sell guitars and such without being a complete douchebag like just about every other music shop salesman.

I was there around Christmas.

The idea seems good, until I saw they were displaying three or four guitars that had 4 or more broken strings and/or were completely out of tune.

I see no point to buy from there when there are better stores out there, especially for guitars...

i wouldnt buy them from there, even if they were gibson or BC rich. i dont like those big stores that do every thing. greedy ****ers. plus smaller stores will be better, cause the person you are buying from knows what they are talking about.
#15
If they did this, it'd be pretty epic. With the price of gas now, driving a couple miles to Best Buy is alot better than driving all the way to Guitar Center.

Well apparently they're going to have an entire section of their store dedicated to musical instruments. I'm going to assume they're going to hire employees that specialize in that sort of thing. Unlike another big chain retail store... *cough*Wal-Mart*cough* I'm tired of seeing old people in the Video Game department.

THIS IS NOT GOOD!!!!! Personally I don't like huge corporations destroying small businesses... I also like speaking to staff that know something about what they're selling... But maybe that's just me.

If the quality is good, as in, they have trained employees and a good variety of instruments, I suppose they could compete.

For me, the nearest GC is couple of miles away while BB is only half an hour or so, so, this could actually be a good thing....

Maybe.

I don't think I've ever seen a worker at Wal-Mart that knew anything about what they were selling...

I can deal with this. There's a Best Buy that is MUCH closer (as in five minutes away) than my closest Guitar Center (which is around 45 minutes to an hour away), and having this kind of stuff nearby would be cool.

The only thing I will dread is having all of the non-muisicians screwing with everything, and, essentially, creating audible havoc. And not in a good way.

Yeah the only negative is walking in to buy a game and hearing Metallica being played badly. I hope the instruments sections are sound proof.

Yeah, I hope they keep children and idiots from screwing up the guitars and amps and stuff. I also hope they hire people who know what they're doing.

All in all, this will be a good thing for me. Maybe they'll get some competition going for a small local shops. I'm all for keeping the small, independent places going, but I wouldn't mind seeing their prices drop at least a little.

not likely to happen. most small independents operate on a narrow profit margin. they don't deal in the volume of sales that big corporations do. if they have fewer customers, most will simply have to close their shops and move on to another business.

Well they do have reasonable prices for games.

When I got H3, it was 49.99 there and 60 bucks at GameStop.

Maybe they will have a reasonable price for instruments?

Plus, with many Music store's policies (The meet or beat price tag one) you can just take the Best buy guitar and use that to lower the price on a guitar in most stores.

I agree with this. The Best Buys would probably have a bigger selction of stuff than the guitar stores near me anyways.

Can i get an article on this? Not trying to be a dick haha but me and my friends ride our bikes to the nearest Best Buy and it would be sick if they had good instruments.

i don't know why you guys are all worried that its going to be audible chaos in the stores. It already is audible chaos. Next time you go there, walk down the audio recievers aisle in home theater, and you'll get a headache after about a minute, that is unless the staff have got their **** together and harass all the dumb pricks who like to crank it up and walk away. And the guys who are afraid that there won't be specialists, that'll be taken care of. Chances are, they will hire someone who knows exactly what theyre doing, and he will teach everyone else in that department. The product knowledge is actually pretty decent for a massive chain of stores. I work in home theater and within about a month or so I could sell anything in the department with no hassles.

No, chances are there workers will have extremely limited knowledge of music, and their sole purpose will be to sell overpriced guitars to impulse buyers.

not always the case. Take a look at the car audio installation bay for example. The technicians in there are all certified and have lots of experience and credentials to be working on cars and the audio equipment inside. Aswell as the home theater installation technicians. Fully quallified to put holes in your walls, run cords, do everything except for move electrical outlets, because thats a fire code issue. With the exception of a few crappy stores, most outlets ive been to have some really good employees. Now I'm sure if you walked in and acted like an elietist arsehole asking rediculous questions that only the very dedicated guitarists would know, the average joe shmoe computer specialist won't know wtf you're on about. Believe it or not, they actually have training on crap like that, but if you're interested in the innermost workings and specifications of the equipment you're looking at, you should probably go buy it from the guys who make it.
