Every day we spend in Iraq could pay for 5,952 students for four years

#1
This isn't about what people think of the war in terms of whether its right or wrong, just something to think about the costs.

The math isn't 100%, it's using some average figures.

Average cost of Iraq per week = $3 billion
Cost of being Iraq for one day = $428, 571, 428
Average cost of college for a year = $18,000
Cost of four years at that price = $72,000

Again, these are rough figures, feel free to correct the average tuition (Iraq cost is pretty accurate)

With these numbers you can figure out...

ODiI - $428, 571, 428 / 4YoC - $72,000 = College for 5,952 students (for all four years)

So, from that we can get these figures...

Operation Iraqi Freedom began in March 2003. That was 64 months ago. 64 months is about 1920 days. 1920 x 5,952 students a day = 11, 376, 000 students paid for four years.

MEFA just canceled loans to thousands of students. It's very hard to get loans and MEFA was a good source, now it's gone. With the money spent in Iraq, we could send over 10 million kids to college for free.

Thoughts?

Just one more reason America ought to get out of Iraq. But of course the owners of America don't want education for the public, they want money.

That's probably one of the most retarded posts I've ever seen.

Your apathy is disgusting, and you're clearly either 16 and living with your mom barely passing high school, or 24 living with your mom and never made it into college. Then maybe you'd 'give a ****'.

It prolly costs alot less for us to be in Afganistan. Still a **** load of money.

it's not just education we could be spending that money on, we could be using it for healthcare, medical research, alternative energy, social security... i could go on and on.

i hate this war.

I know. I was using it as a specific example seeing as American college grads are becoming far less competitive in the world market and prices for tuition are just flying up. MEFA canceling is horrible.

... So?

Go bitch about it.

It's a good thing we went in and intervened,
dethroned a dictator,
and freed the minds of these people

If we were allowed to fight a war the way we did in 1945,
it would be resolved by now

It's Bull **** that our soldiers have to call up the ****ing lawyers before they can shoot at ANYTHING

I'm not joking,
that's how tied our soldier's hands are

don't blame our President for soldiers dying,
blame liberal lawmakers
Blindfolds aside I'd probably still close my eyes

honestly? the government isn't going to pay for my college anyway... that is unless i join the army. haha i find that ironic. and i wish college was only 18,000 a year, my brother goes to George Washington and its like over 50,000. but there are so many other things the government could be spending with that money.. think of all the pork barrel legislation that isn't being passed!
If you're in a war, instead of throwing a hand grenade at the enemy, throw one of those small pumpkins. Maybe it'll make everyone think how stupid war is, and while they are thinking, you can throw a real grenade at them.

Eisenhower warned the USA about the Military-industrial complex, and with the US economy faltering, the government is looking at war as a way to keep the country moving economically.

That is completely ridiculous...not the thread...but the fact that we (I'm American) are paying so much on war (which is in itself ridiculous) instead of something productive like education.
#22
I still hear people trying to justify this war... mostly the same ones who want the US to invade iran now

Everything happens for a reason, call it greed, call it assertion of power, call it hard public relations. The public doesn't know why the war in Iraq is still on, maybe it's for the safety of US residents, maybe it's for oil but it's happening for a reason. The US government didn't just wake up on morning and thought "Hmm, sending some soldiers to Iraq would be so awesome, let's do it".
Messing with religion fanatics is dangerous and it's not that they love the States.

What a lot of people fail to know because of lack of research/care/w.e is that Bush Jr actually admitted Hussein had nothing to do with 9/11, didn't play host to Al Qaeda and doesn't have WoMD.

Now, the bombings in Iraq on March. 2003 were a retaliation - basically Bush 'getting back' at Iraq for their involvement in the 9/11 attacks. So... why is America, Britain, and the countless other countries still doing in Iraq?

When Bush admitted this, why didn't he withdraw troops asap?

I think the answer is clear now.

But what we should be ****ting bricks for is the invasion of Iran.
