...why do people use the letter O when they are reading out a phone number or something? Really they should be calling it zero instead right?

What do you call the number 0?

I say "oh". Takes less effort than two syllable "zero".

I only use it when it is between numbers like, 506 or 57609.

When its at the beginning or end, then no.

With phone numbers? I say "oh" purely because it's a habit picked up from my parents and because it's a syllable shorter than "zero."

I can't be bothered pronouncing a two syllable word when I could just as easily say a one syllable word and convey the same meaning! My time is valuable, and I can't just mindlessly squander waste it!

I only think it becomes a problem when they're thrown into alphanumeric strings, like a tracking number. You should use "oh" for the letter and "zero" for the digit.

But when it comes to a purely numeric string then I think it is common knowledge and acceptable to say "oh" for the number.
#14
It depends.

'oh' in a phone number because its easier. Otherwise its Zero - its the law...kinda.

As a matter of habit, when I'm telling a numbers over a cell phone (not as good connection as a landline), I use zero (0), tree (3), fower (4), and fife (5). It's easier to understand.

Haha. I got banned for telling them to die. She/he made like 50 threads in their first 10 days at UG.

Phone numbers, o's.

Maths, zero. For example if you had

10 - 10 = 0, I would say "zero" for that.

So both.
