Anyways I was reading "The Weird Kid in Class" thread, and to get to the point why should anybody be socially isolated just because they're considered weird? These kids are only considered weird because society considers them weird. Right? Something I should mention is what's considered normal in a civilization, May not be normal in another civilization. Who decides the strange? Who decides the norm?

this is too philosophical for the pit...

but if you want my opinion - most people isolate themselves so it's not society not accepting them... it's themselves.

Im not making much sense atm, will come back when some more ideas hit me.

I find a lot of the time those isolated people, isolate themselves.

You're talking complete bollocks. 'Weird' is by DEFINITION deviation from social norms.

Most of them aren't isolated because they are weird, it's because they do things that repel people. They often smell bad and have greasy hair. There are plenty of "weird" people that are not social failures but their stories aren't as interesting as the typical "class weirdos". Some reason stories of people failing socially >>> people succeeding.

Schools **** anyway, you wait till you leave (if you have not already) and watch how 90% of friend circles crumble or go funny, because alot of the people put up fronts or were forced to interact with each other. I had to witness the same stuff at the end of college this year as well, oh yay.

I'm weird and I don't have any friends. But I know that once I return to my true home amongst the worm-people of Olympus Mons, I will be accepted and loved by all.

I hardly think anyone is going to look at another civilization for comparisons of norms and ethics then apply them to their situation with a certain "weirdo". What's strange or normal isn't decided by a single person or a council if you thought that, they're more or less "natural" or conditioned by cultural standards.

Maybe it's because the word weird used to be associated with witches so we subconsciously think the "weird kid" in our class is a demon performing black magic?

Or maybe it's just that the "weird kid" usually is incapable of social interaction, and therefore it's difficult for anyone to befriend them?

Your choice.

I isolate myself.

But if I hadn't been discouraged from socialising with normal people from an early age, I probably wouldn't.

I knew that people aren't going to be looking at comparisons of ethics from a different civilization and apply that to a specific "weirdo" I just felt that was important to mention in this topic. I know that different norms develop over time. (Like the 50's are way different then today. If you acted like it was the 50's today, you'd be considered strange.) But have you ever wondered exactly how do these social norms develop though?

Actually, if you acted like it was the 50s today people would probably just think you were overly well-mannered.

I isolate myself to an extent, I wasn't discouraged from scoialising though, my mum is worried because I never hang out with my friend any more.

Also, TS, I think you'd have to be pretty weird to not have any friends. Maybe if you were into sucking blood, wearing that borat swimsuit around school, and doing rain dances with no clothes in the middle of assemblies.

True but if you were like the epitome of the 50's. You wouldn't be like a cool guy at school. You'd probably be popular with teachers and parents, But you wouldn't be popular with your peers I bet.

If you were the epitome of the 50s, you'd have to be mentally unstable, because you'd still be obsessed with commies, and you wouldn't know how to work a TV or phone or computer, etc. And if you're fucked in the head, I think it's justified to say that's a little weird.

I do have friends, but there are a lot of people who feel the need to give me crap for being a little strange. Well I can't really say I'm strange. It's just that I'm a bit more mature then the majority of my peers. (I'm fourteen by the way.) I'm into stuff that most fourteen year old's aren't into. Stuff like surrealism, philosophy, Pixies, (the band) and stuff like that. Maybe I am strange for a fourteen year old. Who knows though.

Because people are insecure. So they look for someone who is different whether in looks/beliefs/ideas/anythingunderthesun and dump all the insecurities on them. This shouldnt happen, but it does. We all do it.

Don't worry. I'll let you into a little secret. Often the bland "normal" swarms are alot less than normal behind closed doors and at home.. just from a reasonable amount of experience.
