I'm wondering what is more significant in getting those common, high-gain solo sounds (Dragonforce, etc...). Is it the pickups on the guitar, or the quality of the amp itself?

Amount of gain on the OD channel (or pedal). Higher output from the pickup can help getting the extra chunky and high gain sounds (especially on tube amps as they are more responsive to pickup output and dynamics). But generally, using a ton of gain will get high gain solo sounds on any guitar, whether you're playing a strat or an Ibanez with HB.

Amp quality however, is a greater factor in your sound/tone than the pickups of the guitar.

Would standard alnico humbuckers (mine) or the 490 pickups on a Gibson (prospective) do the job?
