smelling of cheap whisky
looking like drunk shaving
crawling beside a low garden wall.
street.
homecoming of the shit sick and
paralegal.
the city can do strange things to a man -
the barage of action
black men in doorways
it's enough to make your fingers
bend the other way
enough to make your toes curl under
when you feel the inevitable hands
around your throat.
stole my wallet and
stole my air.
but i'm a keeper
day dreaming cool-cut abuse receiver
i know how to hold myself
now
but i didn't know then
i was a cold calling racial hatred believer
set in his ways.
coming away from the city
is a sure way to extend your life
but when the rain sings a sad song
and you cry along in
an empty family home
it's enough to make your heart give up.
