Hello, all.
Long ago, very long ago, when this forum was still ...young(er), I like to think I played a minor role in the community. Alas, since then, my zeal for bass has sadly slipped away, and so, my attendance to this forum. I've been in Papua New Guinea for many months now, only just returning to the civilized world, but even this past jungle seclusion can't take all the blame. You see, my sickness started well before - when I simply refused to work to push myself past my own level. I'd try for a week to practice walking a bass line, then, lazily give up, and not touch the instrument for many more. Or I would get some line or other up to half speed, then once again give up the ghost. You see how it is. Lessons would help, marginally, but I'm afraid I can't afford them often. So, in a last ditch cry before my summer sneaks away into biology classes and muddy cross country races, I call upon those I once knew to try and give me advice, or criticism, and try to kick start my ass back into gear.

Here, then, are the obstacles you may face:
I tend to enjoy jazz, or music where song and noise comes well before the simple throbbing bass. The former I don't have the patience for when learning, the latter, not much of a progression in my talent.
I also have recently found an acoustic guitar and vocals more satisfying.
I think I've long ago outgrown my Stingray.

Perhaps you can help.

If you find acoustic and vocals more satisfying, run with that. If you need to ask other people for inspiration to start playing something you really don't have an interest in (as it seems from my interpretation of what you're saying), then don't force it.
#3
Take a break and concentrate on what you find interesting. And when bass calls, you'll go back with a new perspective. And if you're into jazz, jazz guitar is really, really cool. I have been learning a little from the guitarist I play with and its pushed my guitar and bass playing in a whole new direction. And its hard enough to really challenge one playing wise.

But come and visit us often. I am finding it hard to be the lone fIREHOSE fan since you and Bill don't visit the forums much anymore

I find that I fall into a rut like that once in a while, generally when I haven't practiced with my band in a long time, like right now, I'm really into writing songs and lyrics and playing a lot of guitar, it helps to make you a more well-rounded musician IMO

BITCH TALK TO ME. GET ONLINE OR SOMETHING.

I think I could try and spark you back into gear. I missed your bum.

But honestly, if you don't enjoy it, don't waste your time with it. I've known many friends who have picked up an instrument and ask me "how do you do it? practicing is so sloowww and boring!" Sometimes you just don't feel motivated to do it if you have something that is much more important to you in life, or it isn't as serious a "hobby" as you originally thought it out to be.

Maybe spin a few fIREHOSE records

Do you still have anyone to jam with?

EDIT:

This is a weird thread!!! Its a strange quinkydink all 3 of us were online at the same time. This is the first time I've posted in the forum for like a month, and it just so happened to be within the hour Yertle got back!!! I was spinning my newly aquired Earth cd and decided to stop by. MAYBE ITS A SIGN?!

Blame my awesome powers of ESP

Here's one for both of you and a way to motivate Yertle. One of you citizens of the east coast needs to drive down to NYC and smack a friend for me. She just told me in chat that she was given tickets to see Iggy and the Stooges (with Mike Watt on bass) at Terminal 5 next Friday(floor tickets mind you) and SHE"S NOT GOING!!! Because get this...she thinks it would be boring.

And if you smack her, the tickets are yours.

Its good to see both of you back btw.

I'm seeing Built to Spill, Dinosaur Jr., and the Meat Puppets at Terminal 5 in a month! I would go on Friday but I have work till 5 and no friends to go with hahaha

THATS IT!

Yertle, go to the Built to Spill show! It will raise your bassing confidence!

Bass players need Viagra?

Oh Yertle if you have outgrown your Stingray, I know of a nice foster home in California that would give it all the love and attention it needs, hint, hint.

And Bill is right--go and see some music. That always gets me seriously out of my rut when I hit a wall with my playing.

that stuff doesn't work.

it made my fingers all sore after an hour.

Did it tie itself into a pony tail?

Yertle, maybe you could try a COMPLETELY different genre of music than your usual taste?

Yeah, try something another genre outside your comfort zone.

And if it doesn't work out, I can take that Stingray off your hands

Like Ben said, if you're enjoying your acoustic stuff at the moment stick with it. Use this as a way to ease yourself back into bass by recording a few of the acoustic songs and laying down bass tracks for them (maybe lay down two for each to get back into the rhythm of creating bass lines). Also run through some old easy songs you enjoyed playing.

Just take it slowly though, do a little bit at a time and you'll be back with us soon enough

Inky, you could have mentioned the side-effects of this stuff

Well, hello Inky. Built to Spill? Ah! You're killing me! I've already seen Dino though. Who's opening? Lou? I should try to get somewhere to see someone, or something. If I had any money. I haven't listened to any music but stringbands (the gazillion piece ukelele and acoustic guitar groups of the pacific) and cheezy Papuan pop (generally reggae) for months, so even strolling through my library should help.

I'm more than happy to pass on the stingray, anarkee, if you can arrange the adoption of something from New York Bass Works

Meat Puppets are opening

Stay out of jazz for a while. That can tend to get boring once you run out of ideas. You really need a group to play with in order to feel fully useful, especially as a bass player. Its hard to stay entertained for long by yourself as a supporting musician, unless you're playing lots of Primus or RHCP (which I know we both grew out of). Maybe you could pick up guitar, and try and learn a few tricks on that and write some nice acoustic songs! Or you could record a Gang of Four cover album.

But it seems for bass, you need to find someone to jam with ASAP before its too late!!!

oooo, can I guest spot on "At home he's a tourist" or maybe "To Hell with Poverty?"

Inky is right--find some people to jam with. I was in a bit of a rut this summer and I have started to jam with a really good guitarist and drummer, along with doing some practice with the spouse for some weekend busking. It does help get you energized about playing in general.
