I've been trying to broaden my muscial horizons lately, you know listen to some new really different music... Do you guys know of any really fantastic, different groundbreaking bands that are around today?
#2
What kind of music do you like?

(In before Between The Buried And Me)

If you like metal at all, you will probably like BTBAM.

(In after Between The Buried And Me)
#3
BTBAM is amazing.

Primus is pretty good, and they're uh... Different.
#4
i agree with BTBAM

but i also find Dream Theater and The Mars Volta to be quite fantastic

I went as Darth Vadar to a school dance before.

Sure I got kicked out, but the DJ played the Imperial March and I just felt badass.

Another big recommendation for Between the Buried and Me here. Definitely listen to their album Colors, doesn't matter what genres you enjoy there's something for everyone.

Sigh is a really good, really different band (they're black metal, but they're like.. I dunno how to describe it :P)

A Silver Mt. Zion is a pretty good band too, they're post-rock.

hmm, id suggest Mr. Bungle, early Incubus, Screaming Mechanical Brain, Talking Heads (David Byrne)... Hurt. most of these aren't that new, and idk what you normally listen to, so its a little difficult to suggest stuff, but mad props for seeking new music.

Best description I've ever heard for them. That's from Magero, if I'm not mistaken, which I probably am.

ARGH!!!!

I forgot Neurosis.

And, honestly, I find Colors to be overrated. It's a great album, and one of the best of 2007, IMO, but I think people make it out to be far more amazing than it really is.

Alaska, IMO, is superior.

Pain of Salvation are pretty different. Listen to the Remedy Lane album.
Nothing sounds like Opeth to be honest.
If you're looking to go more oldschool, perhaps some Miles Davis? John Coltraine?

If you want a nice modern rock n' roll band try Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
For a nice acoustic artist try Ellis Paul
If you want to try to get into some classical music Stravinsky's Rite of Spring (yes I know there is ballet in it but it's based on pagan rituals and adds a lot to the song as that is what it was written for) or my personal favorite is Eric Whitacre's October and a chilling choral piece called Lux Aurumque

Try soundtracks such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Lost in Translation, Halo 2 etc

In terms of bands, away from the metal side of things...

Sufjan Stevens
Andy Mckee
Weather Report
John Butler Trio
PJ Harvey
Battles
Mew

etc
