Is it any good?
I'm not very good yet, but I've been playing for a while.
I usually play a Squier Jazz.
I play a lot of different rock, but I guess mostly alternative,
and lately been trying some ska.

Well i've never tried it out myself but most people think low-end GK stuff isn't too good.
Fender FSR Standard Jazz Bass(Sapphire Blue finish!!)
Squier VM TB Bass
Squier Precision Bass(heavily modified)
Behringer 180 Watt Combo<--My EQ pedal made this sound decent O_o until I get my Gallien-Krueger half stack

Is Ashdown good for funk and alt? 'Cause most reviews on Musician's friend were from cover band oldie rock bassists.

It's cool!

I play with my friend who is a guitar player, and sometimes with another guitar player. The one said something about getting a band together, but I don't know how that'll work. It definitely wouldn't be any big shows, probably no gigs at all yet.

As for budget, I'm not sure. Probably not much more than $300

well if you want you can save up for this

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ashdown-MAG-C210T300-Combo-Bass-Amp?sku=485033

do you know how many watt your guitarists amp is?

I think it's 30... All I know is it's a Line 6 Spider III.
I don't know the other one's amp though.

And thanks for the suggestion.

no problem

if you want there are smaller ashdown amps than that and a lot more amps other ashdown

Ashdowns are better for your typical rock tone. Not really your usual funk machines!

To me Ashdown, Ampeg and Trace Elliot have really distinct sounds. They're not transparent amps to be sure. Low end GKs are truly awful. I own one, I know

The best of the three above in your price range is going to be Ashdown, but there are decent amps out there in that price range. Search up some amp threads, but I would avoid Line 6, low end GKs and Ampegs in your search. And Marshall bass amps.

Ashdown should work fine for funk - the bass player from Jamiroquai uses Ashdown

Nope, Paul Turner uses Aguilar. I don't know much about Zender's setup, but I know he used Trace Elliot on TRotSC. Now he uses valve gear (can't get any more specific, sorry) and a Les Paul bass.

Anyone heard of Tilted Smile (probably not). They are a local band. Ive seen their bassist do a 5 minute funk solo whilst covering for the guitarist replacing strings on both of his guitars. And he had an Ashdown. If you eq properly, they are fantastic for funk.
