SD Pearly Gate's for Bridge position to play classic metal and rock. And then an SD Sh-1 '59 (some kind of PAF it said) or a SD Alnico II Pro in the neck for rock and blue's leads, and clean tone's. Is this a good idea? And which one for the neck would work the best? Some tone's I want to get with it are Slash, Hendrix, SRV if possible, Page, Clapton, ect. I'll be playing a les paul through a JCM 800 or similar tube amp.

What i would do seriously is call Seymour Duncan's support line and talk it thru with them. They have a Tone chart and Tone wizard thing but I think you will find you will get great results by talking to them. I love their support period.

Good Luck, and I got a Custom Custom but it is more for Brown sound I would say and prolly has higher output than you are looking for.

So you don't actually want to play any metal at all then?

If you do want to play some metal then don't get the Pearly Gates, you probably want an Alnico 5 magnet for a bit more versatility so go for the Custom 5.

Isn't the pearly gate's supposed to have lots of treble, and be high output? I want that kind of thing for the bridge. Mid output, more mid and bass for neck.

No, you don't - it's got an Alnico 2 magnet so it's going to be too spongy in the low end for the higher gain stuf. You also want a pickup with a bit more treble and presence in the neck to compensate a little for the natural bassiness. If you get a bassy pickup in the neck it just sounds like mud. The Pearly Gates isn't particularly high output either - it's hotter than a typical vintage pickup, but not by a lot.

Ok. So which would you recomend, the '59 or the Pearly Gate's? And the Custom 5, isn't that just a hotter PAF pretty much? Thanks so much for all of this

I have an Epi Les Paul with a Custom 5/Pearly Gates set...the Custom 5 excels at straight up, raunchy rock playing. I went with the Pearly Gates because I wanted the softer attack of the Alnico 2 magnet in the neck, but had heard mixed things about the Alnico II Pros. I also wanted a little more top end to match with the bite of the Custom 5. Arguably the 59 is probably a better match for the Custom 5, it'd seem a little smoother and clearer than the PG, it all depends on the sound you've got in your head really.

Yeah. I was thinking nothing special just a vintage pup in the neck, the hotter one in the bridge. So does that mean I should probably go for the '59?

The 59 is a little less specialised than the PG, and the Alnico 5 magnet means its better suited for playing with higher gain...its also cheaper

The Custom 5 is absolutely perfect for classic rock and old school metal though, it'll sound great through your amp.

Ok. Thanks, it looks like I'll get the PG and Custom 5 combo. I'm actually still saving for both of them, but I'm close to getting the amp and I just wanted to get this squared away.
