Police Taser boy with broken back 19 times
Authorities say they were trying to 'keep him from getting hurt'

Parents of a 16-year-old boy in intensive care with a broken back want to know why police Tasered their son 19 times rather than calling an ambulance for help.

Citizens noticed Branson, Mo., teenager Mace Hutchinson walking alongside the road and, fearing for his safety, called 9-1-1.

"We called the police. My wife was afraid he was going to get ran over or hit," said witness Doug Messersmith. "He looked a little agitated but, other than that, he didn't look to be falling down drunk or anything like that."

When police arrived, they found Hutchinson under an overpass on U.S. 65 Saturday morning, Springfield's KY3 News reported. The boy had fallen 30 feet off the overpass and was lying on the shoulder.

When the boy didn't respond to police, they Tasered him, repeatedly.

"I'm not an officer, but I don't see the reason for Tasering somebody lying there with a broken back. I don't consider that a threat," his aunt Samantha said.

Hutchinson was later admitted to the hospital, where he was put under intensive care for his injuries and is listed in fair condition. His family believes police added to the trauma after he fell from the overpass.

"According to the doctors, all injuries are consistent with a fall," Samantha said.

His father said Hutchinson did not jump but fell onto the pavement; however, no one knows why.

"They tested his system. He was clean of drugs and alcohol. We don't know why unless just being in shock and the whole thing in itself caused him to forget everything," Hutchinson told the television station.

While Hutchinson remains in the hospital for major surgery on his broken back and heel, the family questions police actions that morning. His father claims if police hadn't stunned the teenager 19 times, his critical surgery would not have been delayed by two days.

"The Tasering increased his white blood cell count and caused him to have a temperature so they could not go into the operation," he said.

However, Ozark police say the wounded boy was a threat.

"He refused to comply with the officers and so the officers had to deploy their Tasers in order to subdue him," Capt. Thomas Rousset said. "He is making incoherent statements; he's also making statements such as, 'Shoot cops, kill cops,' things like that. So there was cause for concern to the officers."

Authorities say their use of a Taser weapon should not be questioned, because they were trying to help Hutchinson to safety.

"It's a big concern for the officers to keep this guy out of traffic, to keep him from getting hurt," Rousset said.

A 16-year-old kid falls THIRTY FEET on PAVEMENT, breaking his back. The cops show up, and the boy DOES NOT respond to them. So they taze him? Not even once or twice. NINETEEN TIMES. They don't check to see if he's injured? They don't even check him for signs of intoxication?

What the Hell gives police officers the crazy idea that they have the right to do this to a person? Cops are supposed to be in power to protect and serve a community, but it seems as though, nowadays, they're around simply to abuse their power with no consequence, at all.

This story is f*cked on all sorts of levels. I have stated in the past that I hate cops, but after a confrontation yesterday, and then reading this story, I now find it hard to believe that there is such thing as a straight cop.

Cops are supposed to Protect and Serve. I do not hate the police, they are there to help you, but there are people who will do this. The guy falls 30 feet, so he is obviously dazed, his back is broken, and they are tasering him, no wonder he was saying that. Poor kid.

seriously, these cops likely arent the greatest representation of every single law enforcement officer in the world.

Also, the article didnt say that he was unconscious. if he was spewing threats at the officers trying to resond to him, one could see where tasers may enter the question. now i agree 19 times seems HIGHLY extraneous, and should be looked into for punishment, but there obviously had to be a reason for them to do what they did.

you werent there. dont think that the article gives you every little detail.

There's obviously more to this than what is being reported.

thats understandable though. i mean, if he wasnt telling them he was injured (maybe he did, but the article didnt mention it), and he was saying things like that, and not listening to them, i can see why they might taser him.

now 19 times seems a bit excessive, but the first time or two may have been warranted.

i find it hard to judge police actions, because you never know exactly what the situation was like if you werent there.

See, I'm not sure what to believe about the article. Witnesses say the person was not responding, but the cops say that the kid was muttering "Shoot cops, kill cops." Even then, he's not a true threat. He was laying on the ground, so if the cops felt threatened, they should have cuffed him and given him a police escort to the hospital.

I understand that this world is full of ****s (whatever that may be), but I don't think I'm being all that childish. I'm not sure where you're from but, living in the United States and hearing at least 2 news report per week of abusive police, you'd at least think that someone higher up would see what's going on and at least attempt to fix something. It isn't right that people who are meant to protect citizens from danger are the ones who are hurting, and even KILLING the innocents.

Offering valid criticism of an institution that lends itself to corruption and abuse of power, prime example provided right here, ain't childish..

You could probably say it's our duty, as citizens.

I agree. The media will always share the part of the story that people want to see. No one wants to hear about a police officer doing his job and saving a life. In my opinion, F*ck the media.

"F*ck the police" is valid criticism?

Next time someone beats you up or robs you, make sure not to call the cops. They're obviously unreliable, and even dangerous.
Dear God, do you actually answer prayers?

Yes, but only in a way indistinguishable from random luck or the result of your own efforts.

in their defense the kid said "kill cops"

It's called hyperbole, bud. And there are some very legitimate sentiments behind it.

Valid criticism? I was under the impression that stating "theres no such thing as a straight cop" is a gross generalisation and not criticism.

Do you realy think the higher powers give a flying **** about some cops tazing a kid? Id imagine that they would have more things to worry about seeing as your country is fighting two wars...

Ever heard of hyperbole?

That's not even the statement that guy was addressing.

The thread title, and the first sentance, refers explicity to that song. The TS also tells us he has stated before that he 'hates the police'. I can't really find any actual argument, it's just a rather poor attempt to bash the police service for the actions of some policemen.
