Did you ever go to a party and everyone knows you play guitar
and they force you to play for them.
"but, oh I don't have a guitar."
and then they magically produce a damn guitar.

It just happened to me tonight.
I hate it. I'm not your fxcking monkey.

then I have to start going through the catalogue of songs
I know and figure out which songs will go over best with them.

I can't stand it.

similar experiences anyone?

just be glad people actually want you to play. don't tell me you plan to never perform for anyone, and that you wanna just play for yourself for the rest of your life. take it as an opportunity. if you're good, you'll build up a reputation. if you're bad, they won't ask you again.
#7
Deal with it, people do that all the time. Play YOUR favourite songs and enjoy yourself, not theirs and watch them sing along.

Well that is the goal for some people. I know a guy who hates to perform or even jam because he feels his music is really personal and I respect that.

I agree with Jonn0 and Glen. But, if you really don't like it, do this:

"Uhh, this song is called 'I Raped Your Mother With a Jackhammer and Pissed on her Rancid Carcass'...anybody know it?"

Then just flail wildly on the strings and sing it like a country song.

oh I don't mind. and I've been around a bit.
I just wasn't in the mood.

the dude who threw the party is an old friend leaving for college and he invited me.
it was mostly his friends there, but I got along just fine.
it was fun.

then he comes out with the guitar,
"Dude jam us some songs"
"Oh, what song do you want to hear?"
"Oh, Whatevers dude, just make it epic. oh and something we can sing a long too."

how the fxck am I gonna know what you think is epic or what songs you all know.
its so irritating.

So you don't want the attention? I thought the reason we played was to get girls. That's just instinct.

Oh well, maybe you fancy boys.
#18
I was at a party a couple of nights ago and the dude had a couple of sweet acoustics, led to a little bit of a jam and a sing-a-long. Good times.

+1.

thats what happened to me.
every time.
so I end up telling them to name songs they want to hear,
cause I know a bunch of songs in different genres.
and they can never think of a song.
so its pretty pointless

So learn a few songs you know are/were big hits. Such as, for the UK play an acoustic Last Train Home, everyone'll like it.
For USA, I suggest maybe Nickelback? I don't know what you crazy dogs like.

Luckily for me, I usually hang out with other musicians.. arrogant ones who don't want to let anyone else play their instruments, no matter how much they suck.

well I know enough songs and I played songs they liked.

don't get me wrong. I love performing, but not everytime.
I just wanted to chill at this party. I didn't want to be the center of attention.

at my friends grad party I started an impromptu jam session which worked out really well,
I wanted to jam that night.

but not tonight.

anyway this thread isn't about me.
its about your experience that are similar.

I hang out with drunks and punks. And we basically all play guitar, bass or drums or know the lyrics to all the songs that anyone would play. So we do a little punk rock acoustic jam with knee drumming and an other guitar doing basslines.

Its always a good time.

But in that situation that does suck sometimes. Especially when you're wasted and just don't want to touch a guitar.

Bed of Roses by Bon Jovi is hilarious when you do it in such an enviroment

you get up the the middle of the chorus and in a spectacular way everybody simultaneously fails at singing the high notes
