G'day UG,

Help the procrastinator (case in point: myself)
What do you do to get yourself to work when you have to? I've got ****loads to do, but once I sit down and try to get started, a WHOLE WORLD of opportunity opens up to me that was never there before. I'm very easily distraI'LL HAVE THE CHICKEN WINGS WITH BBQ SAUCE

I can't do homework unless it's past midnight and the assignment is due the next day. I need to get started. Getting off of UG is the first step. What then?

Any tips on motivating myself to work?

Sum 41 ftw.

And I never did homework, it's not important. I did my coursework though, cos it actually counts for something.

That's what I'm meant to be doing.

I've got an Extended Essay in physics (4000 words), a Theory of Knowledge essay, Maths coursework, Geography coursework, a chemistry experiment writeup and something else I forgot due the first day back to school (which is the first week of september. I'm going on holiday again for a week, so I've only got about 2 weeks to do it all).

I haven't started any of them. Great holidays, don't you think? I miss my childhood years.

It's getting started that's hard.

Every time I sit down to work, I end up learning 10 guitar solos, drawing 20 cartoons and writing a script for an animated motion picture, come up with a bunch of things I'd love to do if I ever "found the time", but hours pass and I get no work down.

well, thin of it this way: you do it, you have a good holiday afterwards where you have no worries. you don't do it, you worry through the holidays, you gte in trouble, you gte shouted at, you hit someone, you get expelled, you end up with no school and no job cause no-one wants to employ a lazy b*****d to work for them. it's your life, and you get what you put in to it.

Any chance I could see that animated motion picture when all your procrastination makes you famous?

I used to always procrastinate for anything big, but all you really have to do is just start.
you said its getting started thats hard, but whenever I don't want to do something I go against my brain and just tell myself to do it.

Dunno if you're that kinda person though

You're not the only one. Our English teacher was stupid enough to set the coursework deadline for the last day before the summer holidays. A grand total of 2 people handed it in (the class is about 30 people).

You've just got to sit down and do it. Once you've started, its easy to get it finished. I let myself get behind as well, and I ended up finished all my coursework pretty much the day before it was meant to be in.

Upon reading TS's post I had a mental image of Homer Simpson punching himself in the face, tearing off his shirt and running headlong at a potential employer screaming 'LEEEROOOOOOY JENKIIINS!'

Sorry if i misread, but it sounds to me like your in university?

Why go to university and get yourself into student loans and loads of debt if your not prepared to work and get the qualification. If you were prepared to work youd be motivated to do it.

Sorry if i sound like an asshole, but thats how it is.
Some people may call me tasteless, but i personally think Rickenbackers are the ugliest basses to ever land on this earth.

I'm not in university.

I'm 17 and entering the last year of high school. I'm in europe, if that changes anything. I think it's different in the US.

I find it hard to believe that everyone in every university absolutely loves to work and creams their jeans at the very mention of their subject. University students are people, too!
I can be really driven for things that I like. I can play guitar for hours and not get bored. But if I have to force myself to do it, I end up thinking of other things and getting distracted.

I'm the same way and my homework ends up not done, unlike most people in this thread, my homework actually counts for like 25% of my grade or something so I have to do it every night. Make a schedule and do your homework at the same time everyday, once you get in habit it will be easy.
I'm the same as I was when I was six years old
And oh my god I feel so damn old
I don't really feel anything

But if you get off of UG how are you going to read all this wonderful advice?
My advice is print this thread and give it to your teacher and say "I tried".

Your idea might just work...

The fact is, university costs a fair bit of cash. Thousands of students get in lots of debt through it and if they dont put the effort in its a waste of time and more importantly money.

Yeah, but a lot of people get well-paid jobs afterwards. Like, thousands, if not millions of people (in developed countries and Russia). They do put in effort to work, but they aren't robots. Judging by the number of stories you hear about college life, I find it impossible to believe that they're all robots with nothing but study on their mind.
