When my band did our first show, we started it off with the first 30 seconds of Metallica's "Struggle Within". Used it as an intro. The idea was started as sort of a "tribute" to our influences as a band. build up the tension a bit, plus it kicks a lot of ass.

We got a lot of good feedback so we then came up with the idea of starting off each one of our shows with an intro cover song - not an entire cover song, just 30 seconds to a minute of something, preferably an instrumental. We've been doing it for awhile now, but we are running out of ideas, and it's sort of expected now... SO anyone have any suggestions?

Ideally - something with distortion, our first song is usually one of our faster ones, and something with guitar harmonies. It would also have to have some sort of "build" to it.

Just a few examples
We've done Metallica's "Struggle Within" - first 30 seconds
Submersed "The Rescue" 2:20 - 3:20 - My personal favorite

Something along these lines would be swell. I've been wanting to do some Opeth ones... To Bid You Farewell maybe around the 7 minute mark...

Any other suggestions?

Sweep a major add7? (If anyone gets the reference)

In all seriousness, go for the A7X idea. They have pretty cool instrumentals. Or, if you're like most of UG and hate them just to hate, go with an instrumental song from one of your most influencial bands.

maybe something by A7X?
don't know if you've been influenced by them or even like their music, though.

We're big fans of Avenged.. that could work. The only problem with that, is that lots of their songs start out... BANG... fast guitar harmonies. We're looking for something that sort of builds into a melodic line in a relatively short amount of time...

Second Heartbeat could potentially work though.

The 30 seconds leading up to the "can i scream!" bit of refused "new noise", though i always find it better starting with a mellow intro then bursting into a fast heavy song, a piano intro works really well, something classical the crowd know and will get into then BAM!

the original idea was instrumentals from influencial bands, but it's sort of morphed into..something that sounds cool. You can only pull so many riffs from "To Live is to Die"...

The intro to Blackened is awesome, and it has guitar harmonies, but it sounds better when played backwards like on the record Also, intro to ...And Justice For All and riff from To Live Is To Die (starts at :30, you can do cool harmonies). Searching for some non-Metallica ones.

lol. Our bassist suggested some of the Mega Man and Contra tunes. We'll keep those in mind. Moonlight sonata has some legs to it.

Pay the first 5 minutes of Waking the Fallen (the album) by A7X

That is playing Waking The Fallen (the song) and then going straight into Unholy Confessions.
