I've always thought of John Mayer as a bit of a hack but is "his hit, Waiting" 's vocal melody a complete rip-off of Jeff Beck's "People Get Ready?"

I thought you meant John Mayer was stealing from Beck, the indie artist. That would've been a lot cooler. Anyway, they are very similar in parts, but not all the way through, and one's a vocal melody, and the other's a guitar melody so it's not really that big of a deal.

What does that matter? So you are saying that if I wrote a song that stole the Smoke on the Water riff, but played it on a trumpet, that wouldn't be stealing?

Also, that guitar part becomes the vocal melody in the song a little later on in a similiar tone ...

Pfft. Melodies always float around like that.

It's really not a big deal.

Jeff Beck is one of his influences. Of course he's going to borrow parts. It's natural.
