that made me laugh

and TS, something like guitar tone is completely a matter or opinion, while you might think one guitarist has an incredible tone, another person might not be able to stand listening

Nobody's is "the best", but I like cleans from Radiohead and distortion like Lagwagon/NOFX,
'never a victim,' the role model said,
bang-bang, the bad guy is dead,
always a rockstar on eMpty TV,
the lesson complete, now the child has needs.

David Gilmour.

And Jimmy Page live IMHO.

Edit: TempoTantrum is right though, when it comes to sound nothing is "best" as there are too many opinions. The guitarists I mentioned just happened to have tones that alot of people inlcuding myself find amazing.

I've always been quite fond of Pepper Keenan's tome from COC and Down.

Also Shadows Fall have amazing tones.

And we can't forget Eric Clapton's tone on the song white room, so clippingly beautiful.

The Edge ala New Year's Day.

Perfect combination of effects. Beautiful.

Also agreed with Knopfler as far as minimalism.

If we were allowed to have theme tones that would be mine.

-ZZ Top Gibbons has lovely dirty tones
-Norman Greenbaum's Spirit in the Sky is my favorite fuzz tone

Haha, why do you think the vintage gear that Gilmour used is still in high demand today...that junk is selling for thousands on Ebay, search EchoRec II and you'll see. He's got such a silk-smooth, almost pure sound to his guitar, so many want to emulate it and collect the stuff he used to create it...like myself haha.

Nobody already mentioned John Petrucci, burn witches.

Well, maybe it's because he has such a wide range of tones. But it just always fits the mood of the song perfectly.

Also, Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth. Pure death metal distortion, clean acoustic tone, etc.
