I was thinking about purchasing a high end modeling/effects unit in order to simplify my rig and make it a little more flexible. I just want to know what affect it will have on my amps tone. I usually just run my amp clean because it has such a great clean tone, and then add OD, effects, etc...

So will a modeling preamp still let the "tubeyness" of my amp shine through, or would it just cover it up?

Would I notice any difference at all running it through my amp, and then running direct?

playing by yourself is like masturbating, sure it feels great, but it's nothing compared to the real deal.

Well I play through a Traynor 15 watt right now, and it sounds great. I'm actually not looking for an amp at the moment.

The modeler I had in mind was the Fractal Audio Ax FX Preamp.

The fractal is suppose to be the best. I'd go for it.

this would be a good thread to ask: would a modeller like pod 2.0 sound good with a cheap valve amp?(eg. epi special/valve junior)

It should be OK, but nothing special.

I think the argument here would be that a loud tube power amp sounds much much better than a loud solid state power amp (because there you get some ugly distortion)

I played an Axe Fx a few months back and it is by far the best sounding modeller. A tad expensive if memory serves but with all the processing power it has it was always going to be expensive.

Yeah, i think it's like $1700. If your serious though that's the one to go for. I'll stick with my PODXTL/Vj. Unless i hit the lottery of course.

AxeFX is better into a power amp. It is like the king of modellers. Plugging into a Tube amp will colour the tone from the AxeFX too much.

Have you tried it? I've run my POD through a power amp, but like it through a valve Junior 10x better.
