I've always thought Nikolai Tesla was cool so I decided to try and build a tesla coil. Unfortunately I have no experience with this kind of thing. I've found schematics online, but I was hoping you guys could tell me
1) Do I really need a 6 kV transformer!?
2)I don't really understand the physics behind it. Can anyone explain how it works?

They cost around 1000 dollars if I'm not mistaken. You can easily get them if you've got an ore refinery and a mining vehicle.

What costs 1000? The Tesla Coil? I'm talking about building one.

Thanks Seljer. great wiki page.

This thread is relevant to my interests. Also, let us know if you make it into an amp or it shocks you or something. Amateur-made Tesla coil = entertainment for UG forum-goers

EDIT: I'm pretty sure Kensai was referencing a RTS (real-time strategy) game of some sort there.

don't forget the power plants

You'll probably also need a radar.

Well to build a Tesla Coil you need a ratchet and some bolts you smash em together till you hear a clank sounds and there you go.

Me and one of my friends built one for our 10th grade science fair project.
Although we did have help from a real mad scientist (friend of my friend's dad)

80 foot lightning bolts are cool.

Try to get a transformer like they have for neon signs you'd see in a store. They can convert regular mains power to stuff in the kiloVolts and are very reliable.

And yes, you really need a high-voltage transformer. You're not looking for a lot of current, just a huge amount of voltage. Keep in mind the idea is to ionize and break down air with the charges in the toroid (the "hat").

18 Watt!

Hmm... I don't remember exactly but we used a bunch of spare parts for ours. Mostly old car parts, I know we used spark plugs, lots of copper wire, LOTS OF CAPACITORS.
#17
I made one with a 1500 converter, the electricity ray was small (like 2 cm) but it was fun giving shocks to the whole school (don't try it with a 10000 volt, 1 amp tesla...... ehhh why not? )
BTW it wasn't more than 70 dollars, you cant get a capacitor from an old tv(or be like me and waste days and days making your own with aluminium and glass) and the transformer from a microwave oven, just discharge their capacitors first... you dont wanna die right?

you need a few advance power plants, guard them though. If you lose power your tesla coils will go offline.

have fun!

Aren't these things life-threatening and expensive to construct?

Like everything that is worth doing for the lulz, they are.

Same. It was the only reason I came into this thread!

But we were beaten by a better man, so I can live with it.

Bunkers>Tesla Coils

Tesla Coils are to slow and expensive.

Plus you can put FIVE tesla troopers in a bunker. Which is like 2 tesla coils.

But thats only if you have yuris revenge. And Im almost always the allies anyways

You'll certainly need a high voltage transformer. If you don't understand it, don't bother. You'll only fuck it up and hurt yourself or something.
