I'd get the 4x10 version unless size/weight is an issue.

Gear:
Fender Standard Jazz Bass
Artec Matrix Pedal Tuner
BBE Optostomp
Boss GEB 7
EHX NYC Big Muff
Ashdown MAG C410T-300
Torque T100BX
GAS-ing for:
Boss SYB5
Behringer Intelligate IG9

Will the 2x10 still give me a fairly giggable volume? Size is kinda an issue, I'm afraid, lol.
It's versatility that I'm really after, because I play in a few bands (not bass in all of 'em), and I play a wide range of styles. So is it versatile?

the 2x10 will put out the around the same volume as the 4x10 yeah.

My 4x10 combo fits in the back of my car really easily (honda jazz) and fits into the boot of my guitarist's citreon saxo.

It's versitile sorta, best for hard rock tho.

Just to warn you, it's not 307w RMS as Ashdown say. On it's own the combo gives out 200w RMS - with ext. cabinet it gives out 307w RMS.

The Hartke VX2510 is good 2x10 combo - try it, you won't be dissapointed.
You can't comment on gear until you have tried it!

Think that's pretty much settled it then! lol
I've found it for £400 at dolphin music, anyone know where i can get it any cheaper?

I bought my 4x10 combo second hand for £175 so check out the used market etc.

thomann.de is a german site but will ship to britian and is cheap.

£348 and shipping is free!

sorry, just to clarify a question which seems to fit into this thread.

If you had an Ashdown MAG with 2 10" speakers, you'd have to get an extension cab to get the full 300 watts.

If you had an Ashdown MAG with 4 10" speakers- do you get the full 300 watts, or do you need to get a cab as well?

It annoys me to no end, I can never find a straight answer with these sorts of things from the manufacturer's page.

You need another cab regardless.

Surely it makes more sense to then get the MAG with 2 10" and then just get another 2 10" cab than buy a MAG 4 by 10"? You get the louder sound with the same number of speakers.

Or you could get a different sized speaker for a broader definition of frequencies?
#19
You can rewire a 410 cab to be 4 ohms instead of 8 if you really want. I don't think there would be a substantial gain in volume.
#22
I second getting the 210 and another cab, though a 115 or 212 would be much better than another 210.
Nope, no sig here.

i was gonna get a MAG but all they had in the shop was an ABM EVO II 500, i still dont know how i convinced my dad to get me it
