ok so i play lead guitar in my band. but i dont really solo or anything. i cant improvise solos and the solos i can play arent too difficult. i guess we're in a band that plays more riff oriented metal. (killswitch engage type of stuff). would i still be considered rythym or am i technically still lead?

it'd be better if you classed your self as playing "guitarSSSSSS"
as rythm & lead, switch between lead parts between you & the other guitarist, i think it looks better & you can usually do things more fun & cooler lol

Metalcore? lol.
Yeah you'd be lead. Think about it, does your "rhythm" player strike open chord or a root power chord while you lead the band? most of the time?
If so, then you're lead.
Congrats.

Lead and rhythm guitars are pretty much a thing in the past. I think nowadays we'd just call 'em one and two guitars, maybe three or four also.

I remember Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones refered to himself as the second (banana) guitar.

You're a guitarist.

Exactly. It makes no sense to lock yourself into the role of "rhythm" or "lead" guitar and let that strictly define what you do. You're both guitarists, and you just need to contribute what you can; for example, if he comes up with a great solo, let him play it although you may be the "lead" player. Remember that you should be working towards the music, not personal glorification.

+1 but you did the /thread thing wrong. it's "/thread" or "</thread>" if you like the HTML type stuff.

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

I'd say you're more of the lead guitarist if you're the only one that solos..but a band can have more than just one lead guitar if both guitarists for example play the same amount of solos. Perhaps a band can only consist of rhythm guitarists
