this is a n00b question..but how do you normally cut out the back of a neck? do you just cut it into a hexagon shape then sand it?

I don't really know but from what I've seen of other builds it's rasps, files, planers, and sandpaper.
Current Gear:
LTD MH-400
PRS SE Custom 24 (Suhr SSH+/SSV)
Ibanez RG3120 Prestige (Dimarzio Titans)
Squier Vintage Modified 70s Jazz V
Audient iD22 interface
Peavey Revalver 4, UAD Friedman BE100/DS40

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

Less plane and more spokeshave, I think. But other than that, you're correct.

I'll just try and find a video of Ormsby on YouTube doing it for you...

For shaping the back of necks I use a spoke shave then rasps then files then scrapers. Its a very quick process actually.
