I've been lurking the forums for a while looking for a decent amp cab & head to buy.

Now before we all go in a fit saying how I should just get a tube combo, or save up for a tube amp, I've already considered it, and I'm still buying a half-stack no matter how much you try and convince me.

I've noticed threads where people mention Randall amps and I hear good things about them (most of the time) and I hear some bad things (and of course the "GET A TUBE COMBO"). However, I love the price of their products for how good they can be.

I know Dimebag Darrell (RIP ) used Randall, and love the sound he got out of his rig. Even though I play punk, I prefer a heavier tone anyhow.

Note: My budget is around $600.
My gear as it stands right now is an Epiphone Les Paul Special 2 (I'm really on a budget if you can't tell), but it's actually a really decent guitar for what I ask out of it.

Before I get any farther, give me a few hard cold facts about my ideas for a purchase:
Randall RX120RH and RX412 Half-Stack
499.99, for a half-stack

Randall RS412XC
+
B-52 LG-100A Head

Thanks for the help.

Mmmm... $600, you able to stretch your budget anymore? It's going to be tight trying to get a head + cab for that price. A good SS or even valve head is going to be around $600 alone. + around $300 for a decent cab.

if you really must have a SS half stack, randall is the way to go, but the cleans are just terrible, fyi.

600 is a minimum, I could stretch it out to $800 at maximum.

I tried a Randall SS head through a Genz Benz cab the other day, and I loved it. If thats what you want. lots of distortion, then go for it.

But, like the above poster said, HORRIBLE cleans.

I know what you're saying, but i think muddy is the wrong word.. muddy is bad and watered down distortion
#7
I would stay away from the RX series randall. I just sold my RX half stack as the distortion wasn't near as distorted, and the cleans were extremely sterile. Try the RH ones or something a little more higher end. Still beats an MG though.
#8
Okay then, hmmm...

Maybe a Peavey ValveKing head + an avatar cab or something? The Peavy ValveKing cab isn't really good (speakers are shit.) T'is a valve head.

I haven't tried it, but the Randall Kirk Hammet half-stack looks good (Linkage)

Has three channels, has an FX loop and spring reverb built in.
#9
I have a SS randall and let me tell you, you will NOT get the gain you want from just the amp. get a good distortion pedal. trust me. im using a Line 6 uber metal. it works.

If you can, go used. get a randall RG100. the cleans are better than the newer ones!

Do you think a pedal would suffice to make it more distorted? I'd really like to stay under $700, but I can stretch out, as said earlier.

Yeah, I hope you got what I meant. I just want a lot of distortion, the guitar has a great crunch sound already, but it needs a stack to play it out of.

I was using a distortion pedal through my RX, which sounded alright and did the job. Of course, there is so much better you could do for the money than getting the RX. I would really look at the 5150 combo as it would give you plenty of gain, and would be loud enough for jamming and gigging purposes. I was goign to get one until I bought another guitar. I have heard nothing but great things, for the most part, of the 5150s.

5150 heads are around $1,000 each, I don't have that kind of money!

I think I'll end up going with my original half-stack choice and add in a pedal with the purchase. Any thoughts on that?

I'm not trying to argue, but why are you so set on a half-stack? As for the amp, I can't recommend much in that price range. However, I do agree with the others who suggest a distortion pedal. Personally, I like the Metal Muff best. I haven't tried a Line 6 Uber Metal but from what I hear its one of the better metal distortion pedals. I would also recommend you NOT get a BOSS or Digitech pedal for the kind of distortion you are looking for. They all sound like a can of bees to me. Hope that helps.

I think I've made a decision.

I'm going to go with the:
Randall RX120RH and RX412 Half-Stack
and a:
Boss Super OverDrive SD-1
or
Electro-Harmonix Metal Muff

The loved the garage-rock sound those pedals had with a little bit of heavy distortion to it.

Thanks for your help guys, I'll keep you updated.

Mainly for budget and transportation reasons.

All my friends (including me) in the band all have jobs. We don't have a very flexible schedule where all of us are off on a certain day, and we can't really carpool either (I live with one as a room-mate, but otherwise, it'd be out of the way). Plus, when you have a 4-door sedan for transportation, space is the biggest concern. My trunk is wonderful for transporting gear, and I'm sure it could hold a half-stack in there.

So when we do get a show, it's on the chance that all of us can be there at a certain time.

You could get the Randall RG50TC

Are you compensating for something?

I wouldn't be playing punk if I was compensating for something. I can hold my own when I play, but not anything better than above-average.

A little bit for the aesthetics though, I cannot stand the look of a combo-amp for some reason.

Looks.
LOOKS!
And you call yourself punk! Looks are not what the music is about man
Well, at least when it comes to gear...

Combos= Portability, cost effectiveness, better sound for cheaper
Half-stacks = hard to carry, expensive, unnecessay

God you people are so obsessed with looking the part rather than sounding the part.
Randall RG50TC
you won't regret it

Haha, sadly; now-a-days punk is more a of a look then a mindset. In all honesty though, I'm average-looking, I don't care how I look, and I don't have a lot of money, so I don't have a lot of things going for me except my music, friends, family, and job.

I'll give you some food for thought, and next time I go into the music store I promise I will try out the RG50TC. I'm just worried about the wattage capacity. To be honest, I could care less if the amp was painted pink and bright blue if it sounded amazing. I need a lot of sound for the venues that we play, they're all pretty decently sized.

I also have to keep up with another guitarist who has an absolutely killer rig.
