So I bought a Ford Escort ('95) at a buy here pay here, and they say I'm a really good customer and stuff and that I can upgrade to a different car. The Escort has 179,000 miles on it. I'm currently looking at a Miata they have. Payments would go up like maybe $10 and I'd need to make a small down payment, just $150-200.

It definitely costs more. My Escort will be paid off by January at $1500, but if I upgraded it would be until at least this time next year to pay off $3500. I'm a pizza delivery driver, by the way, and the Miata would make my job a lot funner. The main reason I'm considering it is that the payments themselves won't be effected much, and I won't have to do as many repairs (I'm expecting the Escort will need some, perhaps serious). Plus the resale value will be MUCH better.

So is this a good idea? Is it an investment, or is it just me wanting a funner car? I am trying to save up money because I want to do some recordings, but I'm going to get a second income to help with that - currently whether I upgrade or not my one income won't be enough to save much anyways. Both cars have pretty much the same mpg, btw.

Sorry this is long and stuff, I'm just really putting a lot of thought into this.
SHORT VERSION: Should I pay more for a better car that will need less repairs, and will have a better resale value, or should I stick with my current ride that is going to need at least some repairs?

i would personally juice the car you have now until its on its last legs, instead of jumping ahead to another one. stay cheaper while you can. but hey, that's just me
maybe you could stick with your current car and when its done you'll have saved enough for an even better car than this upgrade

I'm not a big fan of Mazdas, but go for the Miata. It would be better than what you have now, and funner.

I get the feeling you don't like Miatas lol.

To cheeseman: ANY money I'm able to save up is going straight to my recording fund.

I would definately save your Ford and just drive it till it drops dead. Im sure I dont need to tell you delivering food takes it toll on a car, hy do it in something nice like a Miata? Besides this way youll have more money saved up for a better car than both.

Well it may be the better car, and funner to drive but my music is more important to me. However it may still be a good investment.

Well, how exactly would getting the Miata affect your music?

Do it! Life is too short to drive a boring car. Miata's make me smile everytime a get to drive one (I'm a huge car nut, always trying to drive other peoples cars and what not) even though they ARE NOT fast. The miata will better mileage as well. The only problem you may have is insurance.

It may turn out to effect my finances more than I think, which means it may be harder to save up. But then again, if my car breaks once I finally have $200 saved up, then I will have no choice but to spend it on my car because it's my means of income. On the other hand, I'll be done paying off my current car sooner. BUT, I know very well, after having my share of jobs, that it doesn't matter how much you make, you'll still end up having to use most of the paycheck for payments or unforeseen expenses.

funner?
Oxford dictionary says: *insert family fortunes negative answer sound*
Anyway, I'd stick with your current car and learn to fix it yourself. It'll be a fun hobby and potential career move into mechanics. Even if you don't want to go in that direction, it's still good to learn!

Miata really aren't that nice, at all. The interior is cheap and cramped. The engine is underpowered. They look like a chick car. The ARE very pure cars, made for only one thing, spirited driving. This brings me to another point. TS if you aren't a car enthusiast (no offense but I'm guessing you aren't since your asking this question on a guitar forum) don't bother because you'll find this car to be more trouble than its worth. No room for anything. It is a sports car after all, not a family sedan.

Actually I'm a very big car enthusiast! It's undoubtedly playing a factor in this decision.

The pizza delivery guy I know drives one of these and he always delivers the pizza on time. I think it should be in your price range TS.

I dunno if it makes it that easy, maybe if it was a Lotus Elan!!

But really I just don't want to make a decision based off of that because like I said, as much as I love cars my music means much more to me.

No deadline or anything, I guess just as long as they have the Miata. BUT I can't wait until my car breaks, because then I'd have to fix it before upgrading, probably.

PFFFFFFFFTTTT

It's a first generation, not sure what year. Probably '93 or earlier, judging from the price and history the dealer told me about - they repainted it, fixed some dings and installed a different convertible top.

So, lets say you were to wait until your current car was already payed off, would this affect the upgrade price wise in any way?

I wouldn't bother. Parts for Ford aren't difficult to find, especially on an Escort.
Save our cash to get your music out there quicker. You never know, if you're music is good enough, you might be able to get something better than that Miata in no time at all.
Also, I don't like Mazdas other than the RX-7/8 and Furai, not after what happened in my friends 626.

I'm not sure, but I think it'd be more expensive. They'd probably cut me a good deal but it wouldn't be an upgrade as much as buying a new car. If I upgraded now, like I said, the payments would barely change and the down payment would be insignificant. The big difference would be it'd take a lot longer to pay off.

And besides, if I waited until I pay off my current car, I'd just keep it. I probably wouldn't be able to sell it for much, cause by then it'd have around 190,000 on it or more. It MIGHT go for $800~. With the Miata, after paying it off I'd be able to sell it for $3000 or more.

Well, based on that, it seems your decision rests solely on how much you value your musical needs. If you're willing to lay back on your musical stuff for an amount of time to get structured with your car here, then grab the Miata and dont look back. But if you feel that you cant set aside some of your musical stuff for a time, then keep your current car and maybe look into the Miata in the future.

Hope I helped.
