has this ever happened to any of you? you make up a riff/sweep/etc and you show it to your friend or someone, but they tell you its already been done? this happened to me yesterday, i made up a sick sounding sweep, but my cousin didnt believe me that i made it up he thought that its already been done. it was really basic but still i was proud of myself. has this happened to any of you??
#3
Well, there's only so much you can do with sweep picking... I don't really sweep pick, but all you're doing is arpeggiating a chord, no? :P

This happens because all original material in the world is being used up. Original ideas are hard to come up with now because all the good stuff is taken.

It sucks I know.

I think that will happen more often these days because theres 1billion + songs, which means a trillion+ riffs, so less room to make up riffs.

I dunno. Its debateable there is an infinate number of possibilities with a guitar, which is what I personally believe.

:/ it just really got me mad, i thought it was really badass and everything. but my cousin was just like watever its been done already

I don't see this as a problem, really.

It just pushes me to write more original material and push myself more musically to accomplish that...what's wrong with that?

Yeah. I've made a few riffs that have been extremely similar or exact to songs. A few were popular, but my FIRST riff ever was the except same as some crappy local band
#13
yah i wrote a riff i really liked, played it for a while then came to the realization that it had been done before. it just happens. but luckily one day it will mean no one can be called a rip off artist, uless they still lyrics.

technically songs and riffs can be infinitely long.so there will be. just make a longer riff/song

It only happens when I haven't listened to a band properly for a while (we're talking months and months).

Once though, I brought a song I wrote to an old drummer of mine. Turns out I'd practically played a song by this band called Reuben (With some variations), even though I'd never heard the song before.

1000 (or 1 million, long scale) riffs per song?
#23
I wrote a kickass riff one day, then showed a friend. Turned out it WAS the Psalm of Lydia by Nevermore, no difference.
#25
I wrote the Smoke on the Water riff back in the 70's, apparently so had another million guitarists.
#26
i do stuff similar to songs i listen to. And i mean sutff i just got into and it wont be note for note but yea.

Music isn't the Olympics. It's not about showing other people what you can do with a piece of wood in your hands that has strings on, it's about making sounds that are good.
#29
yeah, but not often. i usually take a riff i hear and then change either the chords, but keep the same pattern(if that makes sense), or i will just make up some random stuff

Wait is Venom now trying to end on a good note, even though it's already been done? :S

21 frets, times 6 strings, is 126 notes, which means for every note you play you have 125 other possibilities to make with that one note. However, there are also about 5 billion songs. Lets say about 3 billion of them contain guitar 'riffs'. so yes, the amount of new riffs, especially catchy fresh good ones are diminishing right before our eyes, which is one of the reasons i believe music's quality has slowly been declining.

nah, its coz people don't know how to write good songs these days

on topic: i came up with a riff, and i heard it on an offspring record a couple months later

Isn't there a thread with a guy that calculated how many different riffs there can be with like, a few different chords? I remember reading something like that while back...

well, technically speaking, you can write riffs in different time signatures with different note values and the same exact notes in the same order and it still be a different riff. plus the addition of note groupings, ghost notes, harmonics. Harmonics are a huge possiblity right there. Hardly no one uses those, save for a couple squeals in any metal riff. im talking about artificial and tapped harmonics. but, about the sweep, theres only a certain amount of sweep shapes that are technically efficient to play. try adding a different feel to it, maybe some slides. that can help.
