probly not in the right forum but w/e

how long did it take you to learn how to shred

yes i have used the searchbar for all you smartasses, all i found was people asking how to shred, and forums about ibanez guitars...

im asking this because im considering setting out on this voyage, and i need a rough idea on how long it will be before i can jam along to master of puppets/cliffs of dover/ eruption..

well, considering it took THOSE artists the better part of a decade to learn to play like that, i think it's safe to say it's gonna be a while, you'll probably be able to learn them quicker but to actually be able to master the song and play it YOUR way in your own style, it's gonna take a longg time and lots and lots of practice

well, I've been playing for 10 years and still don't shred

It took me 2 and a half years to learn how to shred and i've been playing 3 years, but I'm basic at shred moving more to intermediate. It takes a lot of time and dedication...even more if you want to play shred cleanly. You should make sure your playing cleanly each time you practice.

well i really consider it mainly to be about the improv part, just using scales and playing quite fast, because thats what it usually is.

i honestly don't see how that's funny.

It's centered around many different scales, mainly whatever scales the guitarist chooses to use. Yeah, most of it is, but not all.

I didnt see the hilarity, but I was just explaining why he thought it was.

well it depends on a few things. When your learning how to shred its not like your going to suck for 364 days and on the 365 u'll be god. I started my "quest to shred" about 4 months ago starting at "I can't play the fast part in the smoke on the water solo." so were starting pretty basic lol. After about 2 months for practicing mindless chromatics, scale patterns, and hearing my metronome click while i sleep you can do some nice basic, but shreddy licks and scale improvising stuff. IN the following months i more focused on theory and emotion so i haven't really been trying to just build up my speed but im starting to get back into it. but who can blame me after 2 months of straight speed exercises lol. so ya i'd say 2 months before you can impress people who can only play power chords and after a year. (if ur serious 3-4 hours a day i'd say) you can probably shred with class precision and confidence maybe not Paul gilbert but you'll be able to shred.

shredding is for small-dicked pricks who can't play anything soulfull.

The only thing remotely to shredding I play is if I'm practicing my scales.

Leanr Rasguedo, it's a lot better.

I don't shred.
