Sorry, but you're not gonna be getting anything super melodic from them.

Mostly the usual Norwegian style from these guys.

1349 is kind of an odd band to have for a death metal festival...

SO if Janne and Alexi did a gay porn, would I be the only one willing to buy it?

That's a dumb question, you know everyone in here would buy it too. I know I would!

Yeah, I expected someone like Norther to show up really.

Holy crap, the production on those tracks is horrible. I guess that's normal with black metal, but why?

The labels they sign to are really cheap probably, or maybe they record it themselves...hell the production I made on some of my demos is better than that

It sounds like Line 6 Spiders on the insane channel with the gain and treble at 10 and everything else at 0.

EDIT: I just tried those settings on my Spider... It's pretty close. Maybe they have a little more bass.

On Liberation, it really does sound exactly like that.

On Liberation, yes. On everything else, no. TS, do you like general BM? cause if you're not a big BM fan then 1349 is a terrible started band.

I need to get into BM. I have Cradle of Filth's first album. It's actually good, unlike their new stuff. And I have some songs by Old Man's Child. I'm sure I wouldn't mind the production if I was more used to it.

Start with stuff like Immortal (Sons of Northern Darkness or At the Heart of Winter) or Emperor (Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk, In the Nightside Eclipse) to get familiar with black metal and hopefully get past the production. Also, for black metal stuff that has good production/lots of other influences, get Emperor's Prometheus or any of Ihsahn's albums.

Yeah blackened death metal is pretty much as far as I've gone so far, I've never taken much of an interest in BM except for one song by Dimmu but that's about it. I've heard stuff from Immortal and they're pretty alright though..

Then you should probably go with some more accessible stuff to start. Maybe try Mayhem's Deathcrush as it's as much thrash as Black Metal. Also try Darkthrone, Emperor and Immortal. Emperor is more symphonic, go with their first album, at least to start out. For Immortal i'd get either At The Heart of Winter or Pure Holocuast. For Darkthrone get their second, third and fourth album. All three of them are classics. The fourth, Transylvanian Hunger is the most widely praised, but i don't think it's the best of them.

So.......
You don't need to get into 1349. If you don't like a band, you don't like them. No need to force yourself to listen to anything. That's how I see it.

Well I'm paying 35 bucks to see them play along with a few other bands, I might as well familiarize myself with the sound so I can at least bob my head up and down and not look like an idiot
#24
Anyway, it's Black Metal. i'm not saying that you have to like it, but if you give it a fair chance there's a good chance you'll be very happy that you did.

Oh I know, Frost for one is very good drummer one of the fastest I've heard in a long time, Immortal makes me laugh but I do know they're legendary, and I've always been into the whole story of Varg Vikerness and the whole Mayhem and Burzum killings and what not, just the poor production and the unavailability sometimes turns me off, but its definetely a very credible music style.
#26
I just listened to these guys for the first time... They seem pretty accessible for a Black Metal band... I don't find the production to be bad at all either.

Anyway, if you're really trying to get into Black Metal in general I suggest Immortal and Ulver's first album (Bergtatt). It'll probably grow on you.

To be honest, i can't stand Ulver. When i heard them they bored the crap out of me. And it's nice to see someone with an open mind (at eric666). The production isn't too bad once you get used to it, it just takes some time.
