Is this a good high gain amp? I've read that the gain can be pretty high on it, but I wanted to make sure.

if all you're after is high gain, get something else.

the dsl has tons of gain, but it's a rock amp, not a metal amp. In rock and pop genres, it's got more than enough gain, but to metalheads, it's not considered an extreme amount of gain at all.

I can pump plenty of gain from it, especially on OD2, but the 20dB volume boost really seems to push it further. HOWEVER, if you're looking for a hi-gain amp in that price range, I'd reccommend the Randall RG50TC.

Like I say, threadstarter, the Randall pumps more than enough gain that you'll ever need. To be honest, if I played more metal than rock, I would have got the Randall instead of DSL.

The only reason why you're looking at the dsl 401 is because it's a marshall.
Marshalls specialized in mid gain tones/mid/high gain tones. The amps (good ones) were never designed to do more than hair band level gain.

Also, along with the Randall suggestion, check out Bugera amps. I've heard very good things about their high-gain tone.
