How do they differ from standard bridges? What are the advantages/disadvantages? Would one fit on a Fender J Or should I just get a BadassII?

Unless the bridge states that it's a direct fit for Fender basses, I wouldn't expect so.

The BadAss II is designed to replace Fenders specifically, so I'd probably stick to that one if you wanna make sure.

the only one i know of is the gotoh BB-3575-010, it's a direct replacement for MIA fenders

i see, i wasnt too sure, coz the 201 is toploading as well. there is definately a gotoh thru-body tho
