Most likely a 3/4.

I use a 4/4, but I'm 6'5'', so...

I'd just take the actual person so I could hold them up to various sized instruments.

I can't remember if I used a 3/4 or 4/4 when I was 5'1....long time ago...but I would go 3/4 if I were you.

violins taste nice.

Get full size dude, she will probably get used to it, and they have much better sound too. I say viola is better than violin, but it might me a little too big for her, and yea get the full sized violin, they aren't very big at all, she can play them.

I switched to a full size when I went into middle school, and I bet I was probably 5'6. I would go for 3/4. Ask a music shop though.

come on this is the pit, surprise + her being happy = surprise sex

hahahaha

but seriously, i want to surprise her. im guessing a 3/4 would be best. im gonna go to some shops and look at them and kinda judge it from that. thanks for the help.

It depends on her age. If she might get taller or something, then maybe you should go for a 4/4.

But if you think she's just gonna not play after awhile, then probably a 3/4

You'd have to ask a music person really, it kinda depends if you have long/short arms.
Do you like Bagpipes?

Good for you

The way you determine is to place the violin on the shoulders like you would when you play and then extend the left hand all the way out to the tip of the violin scroll. At this point, the arm should still have reasonable angle at the elbow. If it's too straight or feels stretched out, the violin is too big.

...modes and scales are still useless.

Well i play viola and a little bit of violin and I can tell ya violins aren't very big at all, they seem quite small when I play one and I'm not really that tall. But I play in string ensemble at school with this chick, she plays violin and she is quite small so just get the full size violin.

That sounds good, especially the sex. I agree with the people saying you should ask while you're at a music shop. They're bound to be able to guess what size really well.

you need to get her a full-size. and unless you're about to dish out a minimum of 500 dollars, you won't get a quality violin--certainly not one that would justify sex. stay away from the palatino crap that they sell online

i was actually kidding about the sex part. waiting til youre married ftw

anyway, i really dont have enough money to buy her a great violin, so im going to get the best cheap one i can find. she actually has a lot of money in a savings account, so if she ever wants to upgrade, she could get a really nice violin.

thanks for the help everybody.

Get a Yamaha one. They suck but they're cheap.

I wouldn't do it if I were you, too expensive even for a cheep one, and its not a "pick up and learn" instrument, there's a lot of basic technique that takes quite a while to learn and get good at...so unless she's gonna take up private lessons with it, I would advise against it.

But to answer your question, I would say go for a 3/4 or 4/4 depending on her arm size (if she can hold the scroll of the 4/4 violin while holding it under her chin and there is "slack" in her arm, then get the 4/4 violin).
#24
well she is going to get lessons from a local college if possible. there are a few music instructors up there who teach violin. im not sure if she will stick with it, but shes not the typ eof person to just quit something when its too hard. she already plays piano so its not like she is starting from scratch musically.

by the way, she is 16 and 5'1. not much of a chance of her growing much more really. she has really little hands too. im still not sure if 3/4 or 4/4 is gonna be best

I used to play violin... my mom bought one too to practice with me... she was 5'2" and she used full size. so she quit because she never practiced and i stopped later too. then when i was in like 5th grade i started messing around with it, but my old one from 2nd grade was too small... the guy at the music shop said i can use the full size now, and i was like 4-9/10 back then... so yeah go full.

I don't know why anyone would not get 4/4 unless they were under 4 feet.

Like anyone in the Pit has sex anyways.

a 4/4 is your best bet here, especially if she's someone who will continue to play violin and won't just be noodling on it in her spare time. Like someone said, the cheap Yamaha's are "bad", but not BAAAAD, so try them if your wallet has seen better days.
