I have a question: If I buy a Fender mexican strat, and replace the pickups with a loaded pickguard with custom pickups that I like, would that effectively make the quality similar to an American strat? What other things contribute to the superiority of the American strat besides pickups?

No, quality will not change, only sound.

Just play a bunch of them, find the one that plays the best then upgrade the pickups to match up the sound

a new neck, new bridge, and all new hardware is the closest you'll get without buying a new body which is basically just buying an American Strat

You'll change the sound, maybe for better, maybe for worse.

MIAs are just the tiny little details that add up to make a difference, but to me, one that doesnt justify the price gap. The differences are stuff like

better quality tuners
better neck (to some, anyway)
better body quality (MIMs are usually 2 piece but MIAs are usually 1)
MIA badge
better quality control on MIAs over MIMS

basically one of thekey factors between MIM and MIA is the re-sale value

in 20 years a MIA thats in good condition will be worth ALOT more than a MIM
Fender Telecaster (MIM) <- the sentimental one

Fender USA strat

what i don't get is why is the neck/body/tuners on a MIA "better"? If it has the same sound, is as easy to play, looks the same and lasts just as long, then what's the point in paying 3 times the price?

2 piece body vs. 1 piece
Better inspection for MIAs
Higher quality tuners in the MIA

And it's not 3 times the price, more like 2.
