Moronic question, I know. But I cant seem to understand why people would waste a pickup 'slot' by putting the same pickup as in the neck / bridge position.

It's because of the different positions on the guitar, the tone of the strings are warmer towards the neck and tinnier at the bridge. Just because there's the same pickup, doesn't mean it'll have the same sound

because even though its the same pickup depending on where it is the tone is still different

^Yeah, exactly.

You'll have a different sound, but not as drastic as if it was two separate pickup types.
