this is not a joke it is from the dallas morning news.this is dallas schools new rules for grading

1.homework grades should be given only when the grades will "raise a student's average, not lower it

2.teachers must accept overdue assignments, and a principal will decide whether students are to be penalized for missing deadlines.

3.students who flunk test can retake the exam and keep the higher grade

4. teachers cannot give a zero on an assignment unless they call parents and make "efforts to assist students in compleating the work"

eh, I'm at uni and thats more or less the system, no fancy bell curves or anything like that

of course, the tests are assembled so you either know everything or nothing

edit: though you can retake the tests like 4 or 5 times..... you have to start paying on the 3rd though

Wow.
That's completely ridiculous.
It's essentially allowing kids to be as lazy as they want, all because people nowadays are too afraid of hurting kids self-esteem.

And they wonder why other countries have higher-achieving students.

Lame.

Schools shouldn't fudge grade, just to make sure children aren't left behind.

65% is a pass mark at my school, if you want to continue on to years 11 and 12.

My math teacher has a similar homework policy. All homework is optional and can add up to 4% to your final grade. She also happens to be a great teacher who didn't have a single person fail the AP Calc AB test.

People are taking their education less and less seriously as time goes on. I wonder why??

I guess a possibility could be the internet. You don't really have to learn anything if all the information you will ever need is right there under your fingertips.
#25
those aren't bad ideas but I don't know how well it will work in practice, our school has a no 0% policy but lots of teachers still have to give 0% on assignments because some kids wont bother to hand anything in.
#26
i think the first rule is the most outrageous.
you could make a hundred on the first paper and none of you other grades would affect it

That doesn't make sense. All the information is there at your fingertips, so when you need to know an answer, you look it up, hence learning the answer, no?

Wow.

I just don't do my homework at all and pass all the tests and I'll pass the class with a C

But I don't need it.

I got a D in my AP World History Class,
But I scored a 4 (out of 5, 3 is passing) on the actual AP test.

I just don't care to do the meaningless busy work

It's awful.

It'll show kids that you don't have to work to get the passing grades.

Will suck for them when they get in college.

In uni, if I hand my work ONE MINUTE late, I get a 0.
our homeworks are worth between 10 to 15% of our final grade.
Teachers like giving 0's.

That's totally the opposite.

Good job in promoting mediocrity.

My school's grading scale sucks. A "B" is only 85% or above, and a "C" is only 78% or above. Bahahahahhahaha.
#37
Well those rules are sure going to encourage kids to try their hardest in class!

In my Province everyone is required to do a big portfolio of assignments and complete 80 hours of physical exercise to graduate high school. How lame.
#38
so they are giving their students an excuse to be lazy and making the teachers and pricipals work than they already do
thats retarded

You have a good point. But to me it seems why bother memorizing stuff when you can just look everything up later?

Here in Ottawa, Ontario, a minimum of 50% constitutes a passing grade.

What I think would make sense would be to have something like a 30% qualify as the minimum grade. However, it would be incredibly difficult to obtain a mark much higher than a 70%. In my mind, this would create a greater distinction between the "grade-grubbers" and the genuine talents.
