http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/How_To_Flash_the_WRT54Gv8

ok so I have a Linksys WRT54G v8. I understand that I need to put the micro version of DD-WRT on it. I understand I need to use this link to install it. But the thing is I have VISTA and i cant find steps for it. I dont understand half the stuff in the steps, I dont want to go in blind. because from my understanding...if I f*ck up, it will "brick" and the router will be useless.

So can someone break-it down?... or something, any help what so ever.

Thx

Well...that's a little complicated.

But to install a simple firmware update:

go to http://192.168.1.1/

leave blank for username, pw: admin

Go to Adminstration -> Fireware Upgrade. It'll have a browser that asks for the firmware file, which you should download from Linksys's website beforehand. Then hit apply and that should do it.

Edit: I have a WRT54G too...you don't need any "micro" thing or whatever.

...modes and scales are still useless.

what is Tomato

a third party firmware for linksys routers like DDWRT is

http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato

very nice interface, all the extra settings you'd need, has been running for me without any problems at all for a year and a half now

even managed to configure the QoS (quality of service) so my brother downloading torrents wouldn't kill the entire houses' internet connection

I did it in like 2 minutes

download the thing and unzip (or 7zip or whatever they're using)

go to the routers administration page and upload replacement firmware

wait 2 minutes for it to go through and reboot
