What do you guys think is the best Prog metal album ever? Id have to go with probably either Operation Mindcrime or Images and Words. Maybe even Sound of Perseverance by Death (hey according to Wikipedia they're prog) or maybe even Abigail if that could be considered having prog elements

Out of the ones I've heard:

1 - This Godless Endevour (Nevermore)

2 - Images and Words (Dream Theater)

3 - Origins of Ruin (Redemption)

At least, that's the order right now.

Then you need "This Godless Endevour" by Nevermore and "Origins of Ruin" by Redemption; no screaming at all on either of those and fantastic guitar work.

Divine Wings

Honorable Mention
Ink Complete by Spastic Ink. Haven't listened to this one enough to truly rate it but I absolutely love it.

And absolutely nothing by Opeth.
NOTHING.

Especially not Morningrise. That one is the worst.

Unquestionably, Octavarium.
With both Liquid Tension Experiment being close runners up.
Colors by Between the Buried and Me ranks up there as well.
Someones knowledge of guitar companies spelling determines what amps you can own. Really smart people can own things like Framus because they sound like they might be spelled with a "y" but they aren't.

I think Opeth is creative but i wouldnt label them as "Prog"

Six Degrees of Inner Turbublence desevers a spot up there as well. Im surpirsed Zylitol and I are the only ones to mention Sym X...

"Alaska"- BTBAM, and i would dare say Keiza by Protest the Hero. They are metal and do have prog elements

The point of underground bands is their not popular or famous most of the time. Thus there is a good chance they suck.

anyone here heard of Gordian Knot?

also, to stray away from most of the cliched prog albums, and put forward something fresh, I would say "The Black Light Syndrome" featuring Steve Stevens, Terry Bozzio, and Tony Levin.

but as much as I absolutely hate Dream Theater right now, I cannot deny the incredible legacy of albums like "Images and Words" and "Awake".

EDIT: actually to keep it real fresh, I would suggest people here to check out some select Ozric Tentacles albums, notably, "Spirals in Hyperspace", "Jurassic Shift", "The Floor's Too Far Away", and "Waterfall Cities".

That's the one with Cynic's bassist and Ron Jarzombek right? Given how much I love Spastic Ink, Blotted Science and Cynic, I'm probably going to look at it soon.

Why exactly wouldn't you call Opeth prog?

They have all the typical (even stereotypical) features:
Long evolving song structures.
Interplay of Dynamics
Odd Time Signature
Polyrhythms and polymeters
At times use non standard instruments

What else do you want?

I thought Tool said themselves, they were not prog? Dunno, heard that somewhere.

Anywho, there's a great list at digitaldreamdoor, miles ahead of those crappy ones rolling stone or (insert crap magazine) does for various musicians time to time.

^Well that's just them rejecting the label, but their music has prog characteristics.

Kinda like how Lemmy rejects the label "Speed Metal," even though Motorhead is pretty much the epitome of that.
