I haven't been able to find an answer to this anywhere. I've been playing guitar for 6 years and after about 20 minutes of playing I develop allergy symptoms while playing. This has been going on as long as I can remember. I get a runny nose as well as start to tear up. I don't know what it is. I don't think it's an allergy to nickel because I would develop rashes on my fingers. This is quite a troublesome issue because it interferes with my practicing. My nose gets so congested it distracts my playing.

I mainly play a classical guitar with nylon strings.

Maybe you're just playing so beautifully that you begin to cry.

I've often thought that playing guitar just puts me in such a relaxed state that these things happen to me, but logically thinking about it, it represents more of an allergy problem if anything.

Maybe you're allergic to a chemical used in the finish? I've never heard of it, but it seems possible.

have you been using the same guitar? possible your allergic to the wood, or nickel. you dont have to get rashes to have an allergy, alot of people are alergic to say pollen, but if they touch it, it doesnt break them out, just messes with there sinuses.

Don't touch the strings, just sit the guitar down and put your nose to the sound hole and then strum it a few times. Most likely it's the dust/wood shavings from inside the body. Try playing an electric and see what happens.

I've played many different guitars of different woods and strings. I have electric guitars, a steel string acoustic and a nylon acoustic. It seems the only real common thing I can think of is the nickel but looking it up http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/nickel-allergy/DS00826 it only describes rashes as symptons to the allergy.

I stand by a possible allergy to a chemical in the finish.

have you ever had allergy tests? now that i think about it, i dont think nickel could really effect sinuses, since it is a complete solid. but more than likely your allergic to dust, because when your playing guitar(especiallly acoustic) your gonna be stirring up the dust inside it, which could explain why you can play for a little while before it starts effecting you.

This post is likely to get you warned. If you think its the incorrect place, report and move on. You were a douche by phrasing your post that way.

And clearly I don't mind it here, BTW.

I'd bet if this is serious, it's not the guitar at all and probably something in the area where you practice. Do you always practice in the same place??

here is the deal...asking a bunch of unqualified people about allergies wont solve your problem. you should go see an specialist and make sure to tell him specs on your guitar. and a lot of things on a guitar are impossible to be allergic too because they produce no floating particles...

Do you always practice in the same area? Maybe a place with an open window near plants? That could be it. Or it could be in your head. You could just be getting hyper focused on the guitar and stop caring about how you feel.
