First you have to have lots of cymbals so go get some of those. Get a double bass pedal so you can get blast beats. Then you also probably want more cowbell. Make sure your high-hat is from zildjan.

This guy has no idea what he's talking about. What you need to start is a drumset, remo or evans heads, 1-2 crashes, 1 ride, and an opt. splash, a pair of sticks, and my recommended choice of literature; Stick Control, by George Stone, and Haskell W. Harr's Drum Method, you will be very succesful if you get these and follow the books, oh and practice!

Even though it's not for a long time, I plan to get an electric drum set or christmas. I don't care that it's electric because I plan just to jam on it by myself and also then I can play it at night and not wake anyone up.

For metal I dont really have a suggestion on the brand of the drums, because you can make them sound however you want pretty much, but Double bass petal is useful, don't forget your cymbals, (I wouldn't suggest using this but I use Sabian B8 hi-hat crash and splash, I also use Zildjian ZBT ride, yes I know they're the cheap cymbals but thats all I could afford) COWBELL!.

If you don't want to go all out and pay thousands for a nice set up, just look for a second hand Pearl Export kit, or something, and chuck some nice skins on it (Remo Pinstripes are my favourite).
Good skins make a huge difference.
If you're playing metal, a double kick pedal would be handy, as would a decent ride with a fairly large bell, and at least one good crash.
Sometimes, you can get lucky, and get a decent second hand kit with double kick, and a few cymbals.
But yeah, look on eBay and such for second hand Pearl, Mapex, Sonor and Tama kits. Spend a few hundred on one of them and you should be alright for a while.

Oh also for a nice deep metal sound, take off the bottom heads if you have just pinstripes and tune LOW.

I got a Tama ImperialStar(Rockstar) 5 piece kit, Gibraltar Avenger II Double Bass Pedal, Sabian B8/XS20 cymbals(great cymbals, B8s are the lowest quality but still sound great compared to the zildjian equivalent, and XS20s are the next up and sound awesome, especially the high hats).

This kit has done me well, just (as usual), switch out the heads with remos(Ebony for resonants on toms, Clear Ambassadors for the batter side). The snare is also hard to get the right sound out of it.

Also, I'm not a Zildjian nazi, I literally went and mixed and matched my cymbals in person at the store, I just found Sabian more to my liking. It can be very hard to get the cymbals with the sound you want by ordering the cymbal packs from the factory.

Just some food for thought.

If your into metal but not blast beats, I suggest this drumset, 8 piece pulse white sparkle $599, new heads suggest remo pinstripes, or evans hydraulic. suggest powersonic remo bass drum heads. get a nice throne, doesn't squeak, low budget cymbals, suggest new Zildjian Pitch Black series, Dw 7000 Bass drum pedals, since pedals that come with it are complete crap, and a Cowbell, suggest this $40. Bell Diablo, best cowbell I ever bought

Try this:
http://studio-central.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=63255

or you can look for a chaeap used kit and upgrade after you know you want to stick with it.
most people start out and their neighbors complain causing the drummer to shut down and they loose money selling a new kit.

If you get cheap new kits, replace the heads.

if you cant make noise, use the Roland V-Drums, they are the only way to go, I like the TD6V but the new TD9 is the best in the price range.

theres no way to fix cymbals but if you know how to properly setup a drum set you can make the toms and snare sound great, but it requires new heads and good tuning skills.

Yes but electronic sets are expensive, and more expesive to upgrade since cymbal pads tend to be around $300 new, and trust me you want new.
