I've been playing for a couple months on and off, but I really want to get back into, but I have nothing to really work on. I could honestly learn anything, because I know very little right now, but I was hoping to start scales first. I've heard the minor scales are good, I don't know which one.

thanks for the help

edit: I also want to learn a couple full songs now, I listen to modern/alternative rock and metal(just heavy metal, no death or anything.)

The major scale - you can't really learn any other scales until you know it.

Quite right. The major scale is the base of all scales (in that key). In that scale will you find your notes, triads, pentatonics, chords and modes. A minor scale is derived from the major scale as a mode (Aeolian).

I agree with some of the above, this is C major, one octave (eight notes worth), in the open position (lowest fingerings are generally open strings).

|----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|
|----------------|---------0--1--|--1--0--------|----------------|
|----------------|-0--2----------|---------2--0--|----------------|
|----0--2--3---|----------------|----------------|--3--2--0------|
|3--------------|----------------|----------------|-------------3--|
|----------------|----------------|----------------|----------------|

It's important to play your scales/exercises forwards AND backwards. Here's a more useful version of this C major (or "Ionian" as it's sometimes called) scale in two and a half(-ish) octaves that can be moved (and SHOULD be moved) to other positions (which puts it in other keys!!!). Note the repeating patterns here. This one should be played backwards too. Use your pinky for the highest (closest to the bridge) note on each string, and play this sucker starting on every fret on the guitar you can reach.

|--------------------------|-----------------------------|----------------10--12--13--|
|--------------------------|-----------------------------|-10--12--13-----------------|
|--------------------------|---------------9--10--12-|--------------------------------|
|--------------------------|-9--10--12---------------|--------------------------------|
|-------------8--10-12--|----------------------------|--------------------------------|
|8--10--12--------------|----------------------------|--------------------------------|

YMMV

Best place to start is the Crusade articles by Josh Urban, in the columns section - it helps to understand why you should learn all this stuff.
