Whose achievement is greater?

Would you say Phelps for his amazing 8 gold medals?

Bolt for absolutely destroying the field in both the 100m and 200m, and setting new world record in the process?

(I would have put this in the Olympic thread, but you can't do a poll in there).

I'm not sure. I'd like to say phelps.

But then again the 100m and 200m world records are probably the biggest world records you can get.
#5
Bolt. 100m wasnt even his first choice event, and had (apparently) never really concentrated on it as he concentrated on the 200 & 400. Imagine what he'll do in 4 or 8 years time, when he's in his prime, and given his full attention to it

Is he in the 400m today by the way?

EDIT: it would seem he isnt.. but i'm sure i heard somewhere he runs 400m too I may be (probably) wrong

One night in the 80's, Chuck Norris was at a bar and he saw a dolphin.

-time passes-

Michel Phelps is the son of Chuck Norris and a Dolphin.

Bolt was spectacular but i have to say Phelps because he won 8 and helped set a relay record while bolt raced less than half of what phelps did even though he set 2 world records

Nope, Bolt was never a 400m runner. The training and preparation are much, much harder for the 400m+ than the lower distance events.

I don't think we'll see anyone win gold in 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m.

It's much easier to swim than it is to run though. It's also less competitive.

I'd like to see Phelps in the sprints and Bolt in the water, would be entertaining.

Back in the 70's I decided to take all the frets off Jaco's Bass thinking he would play worse. Man did that backfire.

The swimming is much more physically demanding than the running as it is longer and requires more cardiovascular fitness, and Phelps did 6 (5 if bolt is doing the 4X100) more events than Bolt and won all of them
#13
Swimming is probably the only Olympic sport where 8 medals are viable. Also don't forget that Phelps really only swam two strokes (I know he won 2 IM golds, but he won them off his fly and freestyle). In contrast, the physiology of sprinters and middle distance runners are sufficiently different that they cannot successfully compete in multiple domains. The only other sport where I could perhaps foresee significant multiple golds is a track cyclist that could win the individual pursuit, team pursuit, sprint, points race and Madison.

Yes, but Phelps does not need a different physique in each race. There is no way someone with a sprinter's build could succeed in middle distance running and visa versa.

I heard he ran 400 too, but, apparently Michael Johnson, former 200m record holder and current 400m record holder, said Bolt should run 400.

Bolt. he broke a world record that's been around for 12 years...come on......

I voted Bolt because he seems so chilled and yet he's so damn fast.

He's amazing at his sport and he puts on a good show.

I've got to go with Phelps.
Admittedly, the pool at Beijing has been noted as being deeper and accounting for faster times, but EVERYONE has had that same advantage so they're still on relatively equal terms.

Additional: That's not to belittle Bolts' awesomeness one tiny bit.

Phelps. He's won more medals than anyone in the history of the Olympics. And yeah Bolt broke two world records, Phelps broke 7. Both are great achievements though.

I could run up a flight of stairs with ease.

I can barely swin half a lenght without being tired.
#23
Bolt for me, but it's pretty close.

He's got alot more natural ability imo. Phelps has had to put in alot more work to get where he is now.

Plus there are very fewer similar events compared to swimming (plus there are 4 styles in swimming...there are only so many ways you can run).
#24
Both men are amazing atheletes but winning 8 golds is far more impressive than winning 2, I prefer Bolt he puts on a show whereas Phelps just goes for it. I voted Phelps because at the minute I can see Bolt beating both his records but I can't see anyone rivalling Phelps for a long time.
#26
Usain Bolt, he could have raped the 100m record by tons but he slowed down.

He gets a bonus every time he breaks a world record ;p.

Bolt, amazing achievement, as was Phelps', but the world record in 100 and 200m is insane.

But people have had the world record in the 100m and 200m st the same time before, no one has won 8 golds while breaking 6 world records before. Surely that's a greater achievement?
#34
Phelps, because he won in 8 "different competitions". Bolt just ran faster than everyone else (the length doesn't matter), but Phelps won (and set world records) in many different kinds off swimming, when many people never even succeed in one kind
#38
Both unbelievably amazing, but Phelps because I'm a swimmer and I can relate to what he has done more.

I voted Bolt because not only has he achieved two world records but he has a damn fine accent and isn't as stuck up and characterless as Phelps.

Apparently Phelps is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

Bolt does have a damn fine accent though.

Phelps set 6 world records and won 8 gold medals. He obviously wins.

As mentioned earlier, all Phelps did was swim 2 different styles (he won the medley's by being much better at butterfly and freestyle, his breaststroke and backstroke skills are relatively mediocre compared to other specialists).

Bolt won two completely different races, both with a world record (the 200 meter one espeacially was considered one of the hardest records to break).

Also, the only difference I see in swimming between one stroke or another is the swim suit they wear (it is better to wear a complete swim suit in freestyle because you glide a lot, etc). Instead, in the running the bodies of the athletes are completely different for different distances, 100 meter sprinters are generally shorter and much more muscular than 200 meter runners. Also, each race has it's own individual preparation to develop the muscles that you need to be good at the particular race. The most a sprinter can hope to do would be 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump and 4x100 meter relay. Nowadays it's even difficult to incorporate the long jump.

BTW, I don't mean to say that what Phelps did was not extraordinary, I just think it was less extraordinary than what Bolt did.
