As the title says, what do you, class as a good guitarist? I myself class a good guitarist as one that plays with feeling and pours his/her heart out on the strings..what do you think?
#4
Good technique. That's what makes you a good guitarist. Playing sixteenth notes cleanly at 200bpm is a good guitarist. It might not sound good but itis impressive. I'd take something that sounds good over something technically impressive though but sometimes the two go hand in hand.

Someone who uses a guitar to entertain me.

I love you =] I can't say I was very fond of you when we first started talking because you trolled the hell out of my threads, but after talking to you here I've grown very attached to you.

Yeah, write to my fanclub about it, honey.

Someone who can create music the listener can connect with and use it to express some sort of emotion. In my opinion.

A good guitarist is anyone who can inspire someone else to pick up a guitar.
The religious myth is the most powerful device ever created, and serves as the psychological soil upon which other myths can flourish.

a good guitarist is on that entertains people with their guitar playing
Billie Joe Armstrong is a good guitarst
Yngwie Malmsteem is not

IMO, A good guitarist is someone who lives up to the expectations they set for themselves, so like someone who feels like they've acheived something.

ok fine, i define one as one that entertains ME

But your opinion doesn't determine who is good and who is bad. MAB, Malmsteen, Vai, all of them are techneically proficient, they are great guitarists. There's a difference between being a good guitarist and writing good music. Noel Gallagher isn't a great guitarist but writes some good catchy songs. Judging someone on whether you like it or not is not a good way of judging because it's biased.

Well, not someone who can play someone else's songs and then bitches because the band doesn't play it like they used to.

Cover artists =/= skill

I'd say originality, knowing when to hold back, knowing when to cut loose, and someone who can understand what a song needs, whether it's a heavily reverbed guitar riffing in the background, or an acoustic playing open chords.

It's all about the feel. Nick McCabe of the Verve really gets it, as does Coldplays guitarist and that guy from The Smiths.

Its pretty relevant to your perspective.

Everyone has traits they like and dislike about guitar. Some believe "emotion" is the key. To others, it is "technical prowess". Likewise, entertainment is valued to some. It all comes down to the listener.

Good musician: Makes good music

Guitar skill: Rsty Cooley > Neil Young
Better musician: Neil Young (IMO)

Someone who is technically profficient, can perform on stage without messing up,and being able to cover mistakes without people noticing. Someone who can play in a variety of different styles, and who can improvise well...

think thats it
#37
Someone who can play the guitar proficiently.

Now someone who can write music and improvise well is a good musician.

Agreed. I learned that shredding almost all the time for a while did get me better, but now I only throw in some shred licks now and then.

Wrong. A good guitarist is someone who can play the guitar well.
What you described is who is the better entertainer, and you'd still be wrong because Yngwie is a very charismatic guy.
