I've taken a liking to "By the Way" by the Chili Peppers. While I can figure out the notes to the verse, I can't quite figure out what style he's using. Is it slap & pop, or just a really rough fingerstyle? I watched the video to get an idea, but it didn't really help. Thanks.

i think he is using finger technique, his technique is quite harsh and he plucks the strings closer to the bridge to get that 'harsh sound'

i may be wrong, but i think he does that. He could slap and pop though not sure

im almost positive its distorted fingerstyle. but i could be wrong. usually flea does slap style stuff in bridges and choruses on the newer stuff and more fingerstyle verses.

Obvious attempt to be sigged.

I was gonna say it was slap, but I listened again, and converted to the masses, its fingerstyle.

It's played fingerstyle, in Drop D!

It's pretty easy to figure out, mostly open string notes. The first two notes are an open string D.

As far as I can tell its in standard, can't see any reason for it not to be either.

its in Drop D. You think the two D's are an octave higher (fifth fret A string / open D) but they're open D (open E string detuned). If you crank up the bass you can hear it.

It's also particularly clear because the second fill in the verse bass line

(ie dun dun doodoo deh, deh, gadurun
dun dun doodoo deh, deh, garub

bolded being the part I refer to)

ends on Eb.

which isn't possible in E.

yeah.
