Yep, the A harmonic minor is a lovely one to improvise with. Also the G, which someone has already said.

I also like the F sharp pentatonic, just because it sounds rocking.

I mainly use my own scale I created, it's a mix between the major scale, the minor pentatonic, the melodic minor and the blues scale. It kicks ass.

But, I love using it in the key of A and B.

pentatonic metal: the scale of rock.
i realized a lot of metal songs are based on pentatonic, even though it doesnt sound like it.

A lot of everything is based around the pentatonic because the pentatonic scale takes out all of the notes that are harder to use while maintaining the integrity of the song. In short, a lot of songs and solos are based around the pentatonic scale because the pentatonic scale is the equivelant of rock music for dummies.
On that note, the amount of pentatonic responses to this is absolutely staggering; learning to use your twos and sixes will make your solos a lot more interesting. Also, and more importantly, the fact that most people listed a single scale as being the entirenty of their improvisation arsenal is a good indication that many guitarists could gain from being taught how to improvise in the style of jazz. Generally sticking to one scale for more than eight bars or so (your mileage will vary) is boring and repetitive; accidentals truly are your best friend.

For teh br00talz I like ripping through phrygian and the harmonic minor scale. My personal favorite though is Lydian. It has such a cool sound when the proper chords are used.

A B C D E F G A C D Eb E F# G A B C

The only note in there that belongs to the major and not the minor is F#; more accurately it's the bastard child of trying to combine A minor and A dorian. I think you would be hard-pressed to find a practical use for this.

I find D minor to be the saddest key
*cookie to whoever gets the reference*

in seriousness i like to write songs in phrygian and aeolian(minor) but when it comes to solos i like minor pentatonics(cliche but i really gets the job done and has a very nice sound) and A harmonic minor

My favorite is F#m, but for whatever reason only when it's played in Eb standard tuning, so it'd technically be Gm. Or the other way around. Whatever.
