hmm... i don't think i can help much... but i DO know that most of these newer bands like Underoath use Orange amps. ...if that even helps. Lol.

Just saying, though, they'd be good to look into. But i'd wait for someone else to post.

EDIT: here... Orange Amps Artist List

is there any particular reason you need a head as opposed to a combo?

For 600-700$ you could probably get a JCM2000 DSL 50. Alot of pop punk bands play those. Older pop punk bands would have played JCM800s. A see alot of bands playing Mesa Rectos for rhythm and Orange Rockerverbs for leads, but both those heads would be out of your price range. I know MCR used a Randall for awhile, but I don't know what model. That might be worth looking into.

Edit: Looks like he used to use a Randall RM 100, but now he uses Marshalls. The RM100 looks like its more expensive than the DSL50 though.

Single recto: 800-1000$
Dual recto: 1000-1200$
Triple recto: 1100-1300$

If you're just playing power chords, rectifiers are amazing, but they suck on leads. That's where the Oranges/Marshalls come in...

I do a lot of rhythm stuff, but....is there something similar that wouldnt be as expensive?
btw, i think if i sell the current stuff i have around 6-700 ish

a used peavey XXX seems like it would be in your price range, and would probaly work well with what you play.

I would just save another 150$ or so and go for a DSL50. It's not perfect and it has alot of detractors, but it's a very good all around pro quality amp. I think B-52 made a very Rectifier-like amp, but I heard they were recently discontinued.

Save up for a used 5150

Jackson SL3 Soloist
89' Ibanez RG570

5150, XXX? You guys are recommending him metal amps when he plays pop punk.

MCR - JCM2000s, JCM800s, Randall RM100
Starting Line - Mesa Dual Rec, Orange Rockerverb
Paramore - they hide their amps, but it sounds like they use Mesas to me
Taking Back Sunday - JCM800s, Dual Rectifier
Fallout Boy - Bogner Uberschall, JCM2000
Green Dat - JCM800
Yellowcard - Dual Rectifiers
All Time Low - Dual Rectifiers and Stilletos
Amber Pacific - Single Rectifier
Boys Like Girls - JCM2000s, maybe a Dual Rec
Bowling For Soup - Dual Rectifiers
New Found Glory - Dual Rectifiers and Stilletos
Blink 182 - JCM900 and Mesa Mark III

arent rectifiers and mark IIIs metal amps?
i figured he needed an american high gain sound, so i recommended cheaper american high gain amps.

Maybe a tiny terror combo if the thing ever comes out. Not sure how much it will be compared to the head though.

EDIT: Didnt read the title to well!

I say the tiny terror head then. Its about $550
Gibson Les Paul Custom
Fender American Tele

Alot of those types of bands today tend to either go the "take an orange and boost the **** out of it" route or "take a high-gain head and go to town, like a dual/triple rectifier" route. both of these solutions are in the 1000's of dollars, so the cheapest way to get a similar tone is to either get a used JCM 900 and boost the **** out of it or a used peavey 5150/XXX/XXL/Ultra head. Check to see what gear the bands you want to emulate use, to make sure you have the right amount of gain in mind since the first route might not have enough or the second route might be too much.
Gear:
Modded Steinberger Spirit (white) (SD-AH/EMG Select)
Modded Steinberger GP-2R (white) (EMG81/60)
Peavey XXL head
Hughes and Kettner Cream Machine
Hughes and Kettner Blues Master

I'm just going to go ahead and ask this.

How much are you planning on spending for the cab?
#22
not sure yet, and that leads to my other question...how much does the cab effect the sound vs the head?

your rig only sounds as good as the weakest link. a great head through a crap cab sounds like crap. a crap head through a great cab sounds like crap.

It matters very much. In terms of tone shaping, the head is more important, in terms of tonal quality, its equally important. If you go cheap on the cab, you will not get good tone.

A **** cab will RUIN the sound of a good head. A bad head will still sound like crap through a good cab. You need both, neither is less important than the other. I can't stress this enough, my JTM-45 through a set of G12H30s sounds like the voice of God, through a Celestion Rocket 50, sounds like God taking a dump on your ears.

a laney pro tube or a sovtek mig 50,60 or 100 would be perfect for you. all around 500 as well.

http://columbus.craigslist.org/msg/808412565.html JCM900 head.. $750 tho, maybe get a little off of it.
http://columbus.craigslist.org/msg/804838081.html Peavey XXX head, $750
http://columbus.craigslist.org/msg/807498516.html Nice Crate combo, VC5112, works for what you play but not a head.

Well nothing for $500 by you. There is a Krank for 1100 with a fender 4x12 cab but that's waay over. Maybe a new B-52 head?
